Tehilim 15: Hashem, Who Can Sojourn in Your Tent (Part 2)

5/31/2023
Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This evening (5/31/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we continued learning Chapter 15 - but since it's been two full weeks, we (read: I) forgot everything! We began by reviewing, then outlining two approaches - the Meiri and the Radak - and then "voting" on the Radak. We began learning through his commentary on each pasuk, trying to build a full picture. It began really well, but got more difficult as we went on. Next time is our last Tehilim shiur of the year, so we'll have to trust in Hashem that it'll all come together then! Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק טו רד"ק מאירי רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זרעים, הלכות שמיטה ויובל יג:יג קהלת ז:כט רבינו בחיי אבן פקודה - חובות הלבבות: הקדמה ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Isaiah Blanks and Joey & Estee Lichter in honor of Tamar Lichter Blanks receiving her PhD in mathematics. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 15: Hashem, Who Can Sojourn in Your Tent (Part 1)

5/17/2023
Length: 1 hour 14 minutes Synopsis: This evening (5/17/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began learning the exceedingly short Chapter 15 (yeah, we skipped 14 for now), which was a VERY different kind of perek! After translating the pesukim and raising all the questions, we sketched some basic approaches and then took a survey of the approaches of our go-to meforshim. We ended by reading through the Gemara which showcases this perek - the same Gemara which is the sole source of the idea that there are 613 commandments. Next time, in two weeks, we will attempt to explain the entire perek and answer our major questions (בג"ה). ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק טו תרגום כתובים מצודת דוד רד"ק ספורנו מאירי שיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו ריב"ן - מכות דף כג עמוד א-ב ----- The Torah content for the first part of this week has been sponsored by Shmuel "with hakaras ha'tov to Hashem (and many yidden) on his engagement to Hadassa." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 13: Until When, Hashem, Will You Forget Me Forever (Part 2)

5/10/2023
This evening (5/10/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we explained the main idea and practical application of the shiur - and oh what an idea it was! Not only that, but this shiur represented a level-up in our learning of Tehilim, and a new methodological concept which my chavrusa dubbed: "the Evolution of the Supplicant." If you have ever felt disconnected from Hashem, or His Torah, or His mitzvos, or felt distracted in your avodas Hashem by things in your life, then this perek is for you! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק יג תרגום כתובים מאירי ספורנו מלבי"ם רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ו:ה ספר החינוך - מצוה תקטו ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Sarah, l'zecher nishmas Drew Leban a"h. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 13: Until When, Hashem, Will You Forget Me Forever (Part 1)

5/3/2023
This evening (5/3/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new perek - one which is short and sweet! Well, 73% of it is negative, but I can assure you that the ideas are sweet! Tonight we translated the perek, raised all the questions, began developing an approach, and read through one of the meforshim. Next week we'll attempt to understand the main idea and purpose of the perek, and maybe even birkas ha'Mapil. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק יג רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילה וברכת כהנים ז:א מאירי, רש"י, רד"ק - תהלים יג:א תרגום כתובים ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Moshe Zucker in honor of Joey and Estee Lichter, in recognition of all they do for the community. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 12: Against Treacherous Speakers (Part 2)

4/26/2023
This evening (4/26/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we continued our analysis of the difficult chapter 12. Despite our best efforts, my chavrusa and I were unable to come up with our own understanding of the perek based on our go-to meforshim. We did, however, appreciate the Malbim's approach. I came to shiur tonight prepared to share all the half-baked ideas that emerged from my own learning, then read the Malbim and allow him to spoon-feed us his ideas. Instead, we - everyone in the shiur - put our heads together and slowly but surely arrived at our own full analysis of the perek! We didn't even have time for the Malbim! I'm so grateful to have talmidim who are willing to think for themselves, share their thoughts, and help each other think together! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק יב שמות כב:כ-כב ירמיהו ט:ב,ה,כג; כב:טז רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ז:ג ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by my dad in loving memory of our friend, Alan Woog (a"h), who took his final breath on April 18th, just a little shy of his 99th birthday. Tehilim 12: Against Treacherous Speakers (Part 1)

4/19/2023
This evening (4/19/23), in our Wednesday night shiur, we returned to Sefer Tehilim! Since I'm giving a few other shiurim on lashon ha'ra, I decided it would be apropos to learn "the lashon ha'ra perek." This enigmatic, Mishleic, difficult-to-translate chapter proved to be quite the challenge, but I think we've set up our questions pretty well, and I'm excited to see what ideas we can uncover next time (בג"ה)! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק יב ספורנו יב:א תרגום כתובים יב:ה,ט רש"י יב:ט מצודת ציון יב:ט מאירי יב:ט ירמיהו ט:א-ח ----- The Torah content from now through the end of the month of Nisan has been sponsored by Michal Zoldan, who reached out to me over Pesach to let me know that she listens to my podcasts. What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 7)

3/29/2023
Length: 1 hour 14 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/29/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we "landed the plane" (as it were). The goal was to make this the last shiur in our current series on Shema Koleinu, no matter what. Because this was also our last shiur before Pesach, I decided to start and end with a Pesach-related point. We raised a question on the R' Yosi ha'Glili section of the Hagadah, in which the tannaim go out of their way to find allusions to extra miracles. We then reviewed what we covered last time, answered several more questions, and then learned the Malbim's beautiful interpretation of Tehilim 93:1, which we then used to refine our understanding of why we don't daven for miracles, and to answer our question on the hagadah. God willing, when we return after Pesach, we'll resume learning Tehilim. ----- מקורות: מעשה ה' - הגדה של פסח: מגיד, כמה מעלות טובות מלבי"ם - תהלים צג:א ----- The Torah content from now until Pesach has been sponsored by my friend and colleague, Rabbi Dr. Elie Feder, author of Gematria Refigured: A New Look At How The Torah Conveys Ideas Through Numbers. 3/22/2023
Length: 1 hour 7 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/22/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began by reviewing the key insight from last time, which is about the "basic" level of davening and how Hashem responds. We then tackled the intimidating topic of "advanced tefilah" and how Hashem responds to THAT. We answered some questions, didn't answer others, and raised new ones. What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 5)

3/15/2023
Length: 1 hour 10 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/15/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I began by announcing that I've decided to stop giving a tefilah shiur because I'm out of my depth, and that we're going to go back to Tehilim after Pesach. I thought the shiur would be a disaster, but instead, I feel like we got closer to the essence of what tefilah is and how it works than we've ever gotten. If you've listened to Parts 1-4 and the two-part Sefer ha'Ikkarim shiur, then you won't want to miss this - and if you haven't listened to those shiurim, then you're not going to follow this one, and will probably end up with false ideas about God. ----- מקורות: רש"י - קהלת א:א רש"י - משלי ל:א אבודרהם - שמע קולנו רד"ק - תהלים קמה:יח רמב"ם סידור - שמע קולנו נוסח התפילה - שמע קולנו + זכרונות תיקון תפילה, עיון תפילה - שמע קולנו ויקרא רבה יז:א רמב"ן - בראשית יח:יט רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:מח,נד תרגום אונקלוס - דברים כו:ז רש"י + מאירי - ברכות דף נה עמוד א ----- The Torah content for the rest of Adar has been sponsored by my friend and chavrusa Zack, with the following dedicatory message: When asked, "Who is a leader you greatly admire?" my grandfather z”l immediately comes to mind. What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 4)

3/8/2023
Length: 1 hour 6 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/8/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we might have bitten off more than we could chew. Our goal was to understand the opening phrase in Shema Koleinu. To do this, we analyzed Shemos 2:23-25 with Sforno's commentary AND the recently published alternative Sforno commentary on AlHaTorah. What made this ambitious is that we ALSO read Sforno's commentaries on nearly all the pesukim he cites - a task we attempted in a Chumash shiur I gave last year. This was a LOT of Sforno. Did we emerge with an understanding of the line from Shema Koleinu? ... Kind of. We definitely took a few steps, but there remains work to be done. We shall see what develops in the meantime. ----- Related Rabbi Schneeweiss Content: 3/23/22: Why Did Hashem Redeem Us From Egypt? Why Tefilah Can't Be Replaced by Mere Introspection

Length: 1 hour 9 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/1/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we took another break from our analysis of Shema Koleinu to answer a question based on our understanding of tefilah that we've been developing: if the essence of tefilah is in the mental preparation, why do we actually need to daven? Why can't we just introspect? We gave not one, not two, but something like six to ten answers, depending on how you count! Additionally, we clarified a bunch of ideas about tefilah and about mitzvos in general. ----- מקורות: רמב"ם - ספר המצוות, שורש הרביעי; עשה ה Structure of Shaharit Diagram by Rabbi Moshe Drelich רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפלה וברכת כהנים ה:ד תהלים קלט ----- The Torah content for the rest of Adar has been sponsored by my friend and chavrusa Zack, with the following dedicatory message: When asked, "Who is a leader you greatly admire?" my grandfather z”l immediately comes to mind. Each person who entered his presence was brought closer to a better version of themselves. This was due to his staunch belief in people and his uncompromising values. Knowledge is similar — it is indiscriminate and uncompromising in its power to help us become our best selves. What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 2)

2/22/2023
Length: 1 hour 9 minutes Synopsis: At the beginning of this month we commenced our analysis of Shema Koleinu and set up a bunch of questions. We then spent the last two weeks leveling up our understanding of how tefilah works based on the Sefer ha'Ikkarim. This evening (2/22/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we returned to Shema Koleinu, armed with our new understanding. After reviewing the berachah, our questions (to which we added a few), and what we learned over the past two weeks, we attempted to understand what it means to ask Hashem to listen to our tefilah. We came up with a solid approach, and then we began learning the Abudirham. I'm happy with where we are now, and I'm optimistic about the ideas to come (בג"ה)! ----- מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה: הקדמה, סיום מנין המצוות רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:מה אבודרהם - עמידה, שמע קולנו דברים כו:א-יא שמות ב:כג-כה ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Sarah and Moshe Eisen, with the following message: "Dedicated in honor of Popo, who shined bright and brought joy to so many of us. The Sefer ha'Ikkarim on How Tefilah Works (Part 2)

2/15/2023
This evening (2/15/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I promised to address two revolutionary ideas. The first was a further development of the idea we learned from the Sefer ha'Ikkarim last time but didn't get a chance to refine. The second was an insight from a friend (Rabbi Trachtman, based on the Rambam) that radically changed the way I relate to tefilah. The two ideas are related. Although we raised many other questions that we didn't answer, I think we're now poised (or "prepared") to return to Shema Koleinu next week (בג"ה). ----- מקורות: ר' יוסף אלבו - ספר העיקרים ד:יז-יח שמות כב:כא-כב רמב"ם - ספר המצוות: עשה ח רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות א:ה-ו נוסח התפילה - עמידה ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Sarah and Moshe Eisen, with the following message: "Dedicated in honor of Popo, who shined bright and brought joy to so many of us. The Sefer ha'Ikkarim on How Tefilah Works (Part 1)

2/8/2023
This evening (2/8/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I found myself in a bit of a quandary about how to proceed. On the one hand, we started a new topic last week and left off with a bunch of questions. On the other hand, I knew that some of our regulars wouldn't be here tonight. I decided to compromise by continuing with the same topic as last time BUT holding off on attempting to answer our questions until next time. Thankfully, I found two chapters in the Sefer ha'Ikkarim in which he explains how tefilah works. We learned through the first of those chapters tonight in which he takes up three topics: (1) Why daven to Hashem, of all beings? (2) What, exactly, is Hashem responding to in your tefilah? and (3) What is not proper to daven for? ----- מקורות: ר' יוסף אלבו - ספר העיקרים ד:יז רלב"ג - דברים לב:לט Ari Bleicher, "Tefillat Shav: The Limits of Prayer as a Means to Understanding its Transformative Nature" https://hakirah.org/Vol%2012%20Bleicher.pdf שולחן ערוך אורח חיים רל:א-ב בכור שור שבת דף כא עמוד א ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Sarah and Moshe Eisen, with the following message: "Dedicated in honor of Popo, who shined bright and brought joy to so many of us. What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 1)

2/1/2023
This evening (2/1/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began a multi-part shiur which began with two questions submitted by my talmidim. We began by raising the questions, doing a quick but comprehensive review of what tefilah is and how it works, then using that review to answer SOME of the questions. We then delved into the text of Shema Koleinu, raising all the major and minor questions we could think of. Next time (בג"ה) we'll begin by attempting to answer the question, "What does it mean for Hashem to 'hear' 'accept' and 'answer' tefilah?" after which we will learn through Shema Koleinu to answer as many of our questions as we can. ----- מקורות: רשב"ם ורד"ק - בראשית מח:יא אנקלוס ורש"י - דברים לב:לא רמב"ן ורלב"ג - שמות כא:כב סידור עבודת הלב (אוצר התפילות) הקדמה נוסח התפילה - שמע קולנו ----- The Torah content for the remainder of this week has been sponsored by my Patrons. Why Do We Say Avinu in Hashiveinu and S'lach Lanu?

1/12/2023
Length: 30 Synopsis: This morning (1/12/22), in lieu of Mishlei, we set out to do a Q&A, but ended up discussing a tefilah-related question and learning tefilah commentaries to find the answer. For that reason, I'm treating this as a separate tefilah shiur. We didn't attempt to understand EVERY phrase in these two berachos, but we did come up with some nice ideas about the use of "Avinu" and "Malkeinu" in these two berachos. ----- מקורות: אבודרהם - עמידה סידור אוצר התפילות - פירוש העץ יוסף לברכות השיבנו וסלח לנו משלי יב:ג ----- The Torah content for the remainder of January has been sponsored by Yehuda in gratitude for fifteen years of friendship and learning. ----- If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Sheva Berachos Crash Course (Teves 5783 / December 2022)

12/28/2022
This evening (12/28/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I shared a summary of the fruits of the learning I've done over the past couple of weeks with our newly minted chosson, Yehoshua, in preparation for his marriage to Brooke. We've been learning through some ideas in the sheva berachos and I figured it would be good to record those ideas in some form while they're fresh in my mind. For the sake of time and efficiency, I decided not to present the ideas from the firsthand sources, but instead to present our conclusions, along with the digest-style commentary of the Eitz Yosef in the Siddur Otzar ha'Tefilos. I'm calling it a "crash course" in that it doesn't aim for comprehensiveness - just for a bottom-line basic understanding. And at the end of the shiur, I do a quick overview of the various "issues" involved with the berachah of "ashar yatzar es ha'adam b'tzalmo" and explain our minhag. ----- מקורות: נוסח ברכת אירוסין וברכות חתנים עץ יוסף - אוצר התפילות ירמיהו ז:לד; טז:ט; כה:י; לג:יא רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר נשים, הלכות אישות י:ג בראשית א:כו-כז רש"י שם ר' אברהם בן הרמב"ם שם ספורנו שם בראשית ה:א שמות כה:ט דברים ד:טו-יח ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Sarah in celebration of the marriage of Rivkie and Dovi Siderson. This evening (12/21/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began with a comprehensive review of all the ideas from the past shiurim in the series. We then spoke briefly about R' Chaim of Volozhin's model of mitoch she'lo lishmah ba lishmah as it pertains to tefilah. Then we continued our investigation of the question of why we switch back and forth in our berachos between 2nd person and 3rd person, learning the views of Rabbeinu Bachya and the Machzor Vitry. The Meaning of "Atoh" in "Baruch Atoh Hashem" (Part 1)

12/14/2022
This evening (12/14/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began with a discussion about the difference between learning vs. tefilah. Next, we did a comprehensive review of all the ideas of Adonai Sfasai Tiftach and "Baruch" which we covered in the past couple of shiurim - some of which we developed beyond what we had previously said. We then learned through a tshuvah of the Rashba on why we switch back and forth in our berachos between 2nd person and 3rd person. In addition to clarifying the ideas he taught us, we spoke about how to implement these insights into our actual tefilah and use them to enhance our relationship with Hashem. We decided to only go over one idea of Atoh tonight in order to increase our chances of internalizing it. Next week (בג"ה) we'll learn another explanation or two from other Rishonim. ----- מקורות: רשב"א - שו"ת חלק ה סימן נב רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ב:א-ב,ח-י רמב"ם - אבות א:ג ----- The Torah content for the month of Kislev has been sponsored by Serena and Paul Koppel, who want to be makir tov and express gratitude. ----- If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you!
