Tehilim 7: Shigayon le'David (Part 2)

5/15/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: Last night (5/16/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we dove into our in-depth analysis of this perek, raising a bunch of questions, making a bunch of observations, and following our intuition. We discussed a few ideas from the meforshim - most notably, Radak's interpretation of the grammatically anomalous word: יִרַדֹּף - but the main moves we made came from our own theorizing. We began developing an approach and mapped out what remains to be solved. Next time (בג"ה), we'll learn the perek according to one of the meforshim and hopefully be able to "land the plane." ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק ז מצודת ציון/דוד תהלים מאירי - תהלים ז:א רד"ק - תהלים ז:ו א' שמואל פרק כד (Robert Alter) תרגום כתובים תהלים צ:ט ----- The Torah content from now through Lag ba'Omer has been generously sponsored by Malky M. June is less than a month away which means that I'll soon be transitioning into "summer writing mode," with more substack articles and fewer recorded shiurim. Tehilim 7: Shigayon le'David (Part 1)

5/8/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 2 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (5/8/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new and unfamiliar perek. I selected it because it's clearly about David's struggles with his enemies and (unfortunately) that theme continues to be relevant to Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora today. The translation-work was difficult and we didn't get super far into our analysis beyond finding the pivot point and getting the background information from the relevant biographical episode in David's life. Next time (בג"ה) we'll begin by reviewing, then raising a bunch of questions, and - hopefully! - venturing a theory about the main idea. One important thing I forgot to mention in shiur is that, to my mind, there is a major difficulty in the perek which we didn't even comment on. See if you can find it for next time! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק ז מצודת ציון/דוד תהלים א' שמואל פרק כד (Robert Alter) ----- I'd like to thank Aaron K. for sponsoring this week's Torah content. Tehilim 113: Beginning of Hallel REDUX (Part 3)

4/17/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 5 minutes Synopsis: This evening (4/17/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we concluded our relearning of Tehilim 113 with the commentary of the Abravanel - and boy did he deliver! I think we ended up in a similar place to where the Radak took us last time, but we arrived there through a classically nuanced Abravanelesque reading of the pesukim. With this understanding in hand, we were able to appreciate how this first chapter of Hallel sets the stage for the chapters that follow. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קיג אברבנאל - זבח פסח, פירוש לתהלים פרק קיג Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, "Building a Society of Freedom" רמב"ן - שמות ו:ב רד"ק - תהלים קמה:ד ----- The Torah content from now through Pesach has been sponsored by the Koffsky family, in loving memory of Adira (a"h), who loved big ideas and asking big questions. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 113: Beginning of Hallel REDUX (Part 2)

4/3/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 58 minutes Synopsis: This evening (4/3/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we continued our relearning of the first chapter of Hallel. After reviewing our translation, our questions, and our approach - which we developed a bit - we decided to start learning the Abravanel's explanation in his haggadah commentary. We only got through the first three pesukim, but MAN were there a lot of fundamental ideas about praising Hashem! We decided not to rush it, and our plan is to finish his commentary next time (בג"ה). ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קיג ר' יוסף אלבו - ספר העיקרים ב:ג אברבנאל - זבח פסח, פירוש לתהלים פרק קיג רד"ק - תהלים צב:ה רמב"ן - שמות ו:ב ----- Once upon a time, there was a podcast called The Stoic Jew. Its creator made episodes every weekday for the entirety of its first year. The frequency switched to weekly, then monthly, until eventually, the flow trickled to a stop. I know I'm not the only one who has missed this podcast and would like it to continue. I have a modest goal for getting it going again: one episode each week for the month of April. For starters. If you, too, were a fan of TSJ and are willing to be a sponsor, I have a feeling that a sponsorship might provide just the right measure of accountability to help me get the podcast back on its feet. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 113: Beginning of Hallel REDUX (Part 1)

3/27/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour Synopsis: This evening (3/27/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new project: re-learning Hallel! (or at least, the first two chapters) The last time I gave shiur on Hallel was three years ago, and there's been enough distance and enough natural forgetting that I feel like I can learn everything with a relatively fresh mind. And even if I can't, we have SOOO many more resources on AlHaTorah than we had last time! Tonight we began with the first perek of Hallel. After translating the perek and identifying the pivot point, we raised a ton of questions and began theorizing. Next time (בג"ה) we'll refine our approach and see what the meforshim have to say. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קיג תרגום רס"ג אבן עזרא - קהלת ג:יא שיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו - תהלים קיג:א רד"ק - תהלים צ:א מגילה דף לא עמוד א ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously. When I asked the donor what they'd like their dedicatory message to say, they responded: "You can say it was because of your Dennis Rodman breakthrough" (referring to a point I made in a recent Megilah shiur). I love feedback like this because it shows me that people enjoy and gain from the sometimes eclectic Torah I share. 3/20/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Note: You are advised to at LEAST listen to Part 2 before this one, but in a pinch, you'll probably still gain if you just listen to Part 3, since we begin with a review of everything we covered in Parts 1 and 2. Length: 1 hour 2 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/20/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we had one objective: to "land the plane" (i.e. bring our analysis to a close), and with Hashem's help, we did! We began by reviewing the text, then reviewing the approach we started developing last time. Then, in a bit of a gamble, we dove into the commentary of R' Elia di Nola because our approach SEEMED to fit with his - and it did! His commentary, which was beautiful in and of itself, gave us what we needed to ifinalize our understanding. We emerged with an appreciation of this powerful perek, which provides much needed guidance, solace, and hope for those of us who suffer in this long exile. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק כב שיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו (ר' אליה די נולה) מלבי"ם - תהלים כב:ד-ה ----- The Torah content from now through Shushan Purim has been sponsored by Yael. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Tehilim 22: Al Ayeles ha'Shachar (Part 2: Developing an Approach) Note: In this case, you do NOT need to have listened to Part 1 in order to follow Part 2 Length: 1 hour 4 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/13/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we had a LOT of work to do, since we barely got any analysis done last time. I was hopeful but worried about whether we'd make any progress, since this is a TOUGH perek. With Hashem's help, we made a huge breakthrough! After identifying the pivot and consulting some meforshim for context and confirmation, we developed an approach to the main idea which was EYE-OPENING, and carries the potential to change the way I see the current situation in Israel. Next time (בג"ה), we'll develop this idea further and see what the meforshim have to say! This was yet another reminder of how tragic it is that people sit there with all these questions and problems with God, BUT THEY DON'T LEARN TEHILIM! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק כב מאירי - תהלים כב:א רד"ק - שם ספורנו - א,י-יא,כח-ל רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות יב:א ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by the Fischbeins (who enjoy reading the sponsorship messages every week) in honor of Chen and Max's wedding and with a tefilah for lasting peace in Israel. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 22: Al Ayeles ha'Shachar (Part 1: Reading and Translation)

3/6/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This evening (3/6/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new perek: the somewhat lengthy and exceedingly difficult-to-read chapter 22. We chose this because Chazal hold that it's about Esther, but we'll follow our usual approach and attempt to learn it on its own before delving into that approach. We ended up needing to spend the entire hour cranking out a translation - with plenty of help from the BDB, Artscroll, and Alter - which left almost no time for us to begin our analysis. That will commence next week (בג"ה). ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק כב Artscroll Robert Alter Matthew 27:46 ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by the Fischbeins (who enjoy reading the sponsorship messages every week) in honor of Chen and Max's wedding and with a tefilah for lasting peace in Israel. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Tehilim 139: You Investigated Me and You Know (Part 3)

2/28/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 8 minutes Synopsis: This evening (2/28/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we aimed to wrap up our analysis. After a thorough review of what we covered last time, we read the Meiri's commentary on the final six pesukim. This drew us into the esoteric vortex-like topic of God's Omniscience. We spent as much time on that as we needed (and perhaps a little more), then finished the Meiri and attempted to state the main idea, and I believe we succeeded! Sure, there's a lot more to be developed, but I'm happy with what we came up with, and I definitely want to revisit this perek in the future. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קלט מאירי רלב"ג - שמות לב:לב רמב"ן - שמות יג:טז Seymour Feldman - "Gersonides: Judaism within the Limits of Reason" ----- This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Jonah Mishaan with appreciation for Rabbi Schneeweiss, who gathers wisdom from various disciplines. Tehilim 139: You Investigated Me and You Know (Part 1)

2/14/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This evening (2/14/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new perek, and was it a DOOZY of a perek! Lengthy, poetic, filled with cryptic words and phrases and the abrupt pivot-point of them all. Daunting as it was, we raised a bunch of good questions and mapped out several approaches which look like they have potential. We'll have to wait until next week to see whether we solve the mystery! ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קלט מצודת ציון ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Isaac, out of Hakaras HaTov to Hashem for giving him a new job that will enable him to continue to learn and to grow. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. The Berachos of Milah (Tefilah Exploration) Part 2

2/7/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 8 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (2/7/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim/Tefilah shiur, we continued our (unprepared) exploration of the berachos said at a bris milah, with a focus on the third berachah. We read through the commentaries of the Rambam (in one of his tshuvos), Rashi (on the Gemara), and the Abudarham, and while we weren't able to go TOO in-depth, we did walk away with some nice ideas and questions to think about. ----- מקורות: אבודרהם השלם - לח:א-ב סידור הרמב"ם רמב"ם - שו"ת קל"ב רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות מילה ב:א; ג:ה רמב"ם - ספר המצוות עשה ג ספורנו - בראשית יז:ז רש"י - שבת דף קלז עמוד ב רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:מט ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Isaac, out of Hakaras HaTov to Hashem for giving him a new job that will enable him to continue to learn and to grow. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. The Berachos of Milah (Tefilah Exploration) Part 1

1/31/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! NOTE: I made a mistake in my translation of the response to the 2nd berachah, according to the Rambam. It should be: "just as YOU brought him into the covenant, so should you bring him to Torah, to chuppah, and to good deeds." Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This evening (1/31/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we had a last-minute change of plans. Since the bris milah of the first son of my friends/chavrusas/students/Tehilim-shiur-attendees, Isaiah and Tamar, is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning, I figured this would be a good time to look into the berachos we say at a bris. We went through the facts and then focused on the berachah of le'hachniso bi'briso shel Avraham Avinu. Although this was an unprepared shiur (hence, the word "exploration" in the title), we made some nice headway! בג"ה, we'll continue next week. ----- מקורות: אבודרהם השלם - לח:א-ב סידור הרמב"ם רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות מילה ג:א-ה יד פשוטה שם ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Uncle Isaac, on the occasion of the birth of his nephew — and in honor of Tamar and Isaiah on the birth of their son — Ezra Raphael. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. 1/10/2024
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour Synopsis: This evening (1/10/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we set out to answer our two most pressing Tehilim questions: (1) What is the main idea of the perek? (2) What is the purpose? Thanks to the commentary of R' Elia di Nola (a.k.a. Shiurei R' Ovadyah Sforno) we did just that! Even though it looked like this perek was more about David and Doeg, we ended up seeing how it can be applied to us, and to our relationship with Hashem. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק נב שיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו ספורנו סנהדרין דף קו עמוד ב רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג רמב"ם - משנה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ד:א רשב"ץ - אבות ד:א ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Avital as a way of saying "thank you for your teaching advice and philosophy." Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 58 minutes Synopsis: This evening (12/13/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we reviewed what we did last time, took a couple of hesitant steps to explain the perek on our own, and then decided to let me Malbim "spoon-feed" us. We read through his commentary, then stepped back to analyze it, and BAM - we came up with a theory for the main idea and the purpose of the perek based on the Malbim's approach! We even came full circle and shed a new light on the minhag to recite Al Naharos Bavel before birkas ha'mazon. 12/6/2023
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This evening (12/6/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, continued working on our perek. After reviewing the translation, the questions, and the moves we made last time, we learned a bit of Tehilim methodology from Ibn Ezra, then introduced a critical fact we were missing last time which shifted the way we approached the perek. After reading through the Radak's commentary on the entire perek, as well as the Meiri and the Ibn Ezra on the final three pesukim, we attempted to come up with a theory of the main idea. We DID come up with an approach, but it still needs work. We'll try again next week (בג"ה), and if that fails, we'll let the Malbim spoon-feed us an idea. ----- מקורות: תהלים פרק קלז אבן עזרא - הקדמה לספר תהלים ספורנו - תהלים קלז:א רד"ק מאירי - תהלים קלז:ז-ט אבן עזרא - תהלים קלז:ז-ט ----- The Torah content for this week (until Chanukah) has been sponsored by ME, on the occasion of my 23rd gerriversary. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Length: 1 hour Synopsis: This evening (11/29/23), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we took up Al Naharos Bavel. After an introductory "myth-busters" mini-shiur on the REAL minhag of Shir ha'Maalos (which most people do NOT follow) and a methodological interlude from William Hazlitt, we translated the perek, identified the pivot point, and began raising questions and problems - especially with regards to the jarringly gruesome final pasuk.
