Seven Mile Road Church Hyannis

For the next nine weeks leading up to Easter, we are going to immerse ourselves in Paul's letter to the Philippian church. This week, we'll cover the backstory of how this unexpected church came to be. Paul set out to spread the gospel in one direction, but God sent him the opposite way. What do we do when God takes our good plans and completely redirects us toward his greater purpose?

Jesus is the Son of Mary. But who is she and why does that matter? The church tends toward two big mistakes when it comes to the mother of the Lord--she's either elevated to a level of holiness belonging to God alone or disregarded out of fear of doing that first thing. In this sermon, we're going to see what Scripture says about Mary and why she matters in the origin story of Jesus.

We're finishing up our "Beginnings" series looking at Paul's words to the early church and to us in Ephesians 4. In the last two sermons we've looked at how the church is one and how the church can build itself up through service. In this sermon, we talk about how the church ought to treat one another. What does unity and harmony in the church look like?

We're continuing in chapter 4 of Ephesians. Paul establishes that the church is one body in the beginning of this chapter. Now, we move on to look at God's plan for building up the body. Maturity in the body of Christ is critical, but it's also a process. In this sermon, we'll look at what the church looks like when believers are equipped for the work of ministry and continue to strive for unity.

If you want a glimpse at the foundation of the church's identity in Christ and the unity that flows from that, you need to read Paul's letter to the Ephesians! In this sermon, we unpack the meaning of one of Paul's most profound declarations: There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope at your calling—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all (Eph 4:4).

Paul started churches and built strong bonds with locals across the Roman Empire. In this chapter, we get a glimpse of a tearful farewell address to the Elders at Ephesus. In this goodbye, Paul infuses core values that should be found in every church.

In our last sermon, we looked at Acts 8—how persecution scattered the church and sent the gospel to the nations. But what happens when the chief persecutor becomes a believer? This week we’ll look at the conversion of Saul. Saul goes on to become who we now know as the Apostle Paul. How did he go from enemy to Apostle?

In this sermon, the Book of Acts shows us the first description of the gathered church. These 5 verses are packed with significance and give us a window into how the gospel shapes community. Often we either over-idealize the early church or dismiss it as a mere historical description. But there's a challenge in this passage. What happens to a person, a community, when they encounter the grace of the gospel?

The church started with a spectacle on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem. We're going to look at the Apostle Peter's sermon and what it meant for the Holy Spirit to descend on the disciples of Jesus. The day of Pentecost marks the day the disciples transformed from those hiding in the upper room to those who would turn the world upside down!

Before the early Church gets rolling, Jesus tells his apostles to wait. They're hoping he'll restore the kingdom back to Israel. But instead of taking the world by storm through war and other physical means of establishing a kingdom, Jesus tells his apostles that they will be witnesses—not warriors. What does it look like when we trade our great ideas in for the plan of God?

Before the earliest church gathered, Jesus commissioned his followers to make disciples of all nations. This mission has undergirded and propelled the church for almost 2,000 years! Needless to say, it's worth our time to get it right!

In this passage, as Jesus is about to ascend to Heaven, he commissions his disciples with words that have defined the mission of the church for nearly 2,000 years. This Sunday, we'll unpack this passage and look at how this call has defined our mission as a new church in Hyannis and what it looks like for us to follow Jesus together.

We're continuing our series, looking at accounts of Jesus' interactions after he was raised from the dead. The Gospels don't immediately end at the resurrection of Jesus. He appeared to many of his disciples and continued his work of restoration before ascending to the Father. In this sermon, we'll look at his interaction with his disciple, Thomas. Thomas often gets labeled as a doubter, but we're going to take a closer look at how Jesus responds to his unusual request.

We’ve journeyed with Jesus in the book of Luke as he made his way to the cross. We’ve celebrated his resurrection and the empty tomb. But the story doesn’t end there. In our passage this week, Jesus walks alongside two hopeless and dependent disciples who have yet to recognize the risen Christ. Jesus shows us what it looks like to come alongside others on hopeless roads. This is also the passage where we got the name for our church! In this sermon we look at how the resurrection makes sense of the three meals we see in the Bible—Passover, the Last Supper, and the Kingdom Banquet. Each of these meals uniquely points to a God who keeps his promises and the Messiah at the center of it all. Jesus has a place set for you at his table. How will you respond to his invitation?

We're wrapping up our Lent sermon series, looking at Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus enters Jerusalem as an unlikely king riding on a donkey. He's met with mania from the crowds as they welcome him with shouts of joy. When we look at this scene we have to ask: How is it that within just a few days, the crowds would turn from praise to pleading for his crucifixion?

We continue our journey through the second half of Luke as we track Jesus' journey to the cross. In this passage, Jesus gets invited to a banquet at the house of a prominent religious leader. This comfortable insider meal is interrupted by an outsider in need. Jesus never wasted an interruption! This insider/outsider clash sparks valuable teaching on what it looks like to be on the "inside" with God.

We're continuing to track with Jesus as he journeys to the cross in the final half of Luke's Gospel. In this passage, a man requests that Jesus make his brother divide their inheritance with him. Jesus uses this request to teach a valuable lesson on the temporary nature of the things we work so hard to acquire.
