Hunger Hormones - Patti & Michael Talk Leptin and Adipose Tissue

9/19/2023
Many of us think of adipose tissue as just a place to store excess fat to be used for energy. However, adipose tissue is very biologically active and secretes some important hormones and mediators called adipokines. These messengers help regulate glucose and lipid metabolism, control hunger, and affect insulin levels. That being said, ALL of our hormones work together like a symphony – cortisol, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, and don’t forget the adipokines. In today’s episode, we discuss important bioactive messengers created by our fat tissue (leptin and adiponectin), how they affect us systemically, and strategies to optimize them. Microbiome Diversity [Rebroadcast]

9/12/2023
The commensal bacteria in the gut microbiome are responsible for so many important functions. Their influence is far-reaching as it relates to overall health. Research shows us that the more diverse that community of bacteria is, the more beneficial it is to systemic health. But what does diversity mean and how do we measure it? There are many calculations used when it comes to diversity of the microbiome, and they can sometimes give differing information. It’s important to understand what’s being measured in order to clinically correlate the result. In today’s episode, we discuss the industry standard Shannon Diversity Index as measured on Genova’s brand new Microbiomix profile. Nonpathogenic Parasites?

7/11/2023
The topic of intestinal parasites and their prevalence is hotly debated in functional medicine. Furthermore, the increasing trend of people performing a ‘parasite cleanse’ of the GI tract can be dangerous. Parasites are diagnosed in the stool using microscopy, direct exam, and PCR – but even then, not all parasites should be treated. Some can cause significant illness, yet others are not invasive, self-limiting, and considered nonpathogenic. In today's episode, we give a refresher course on gut parasites, discuss different ways to assess them, and introduce the topic of nonpathogenic parasites that don’t need to be treated.
