Joscha Bach on the bible, emotions and how AI could be wonderful.

5/8/2024
Joscha Bach is a cognitive scientist and artificial intelligence researcher. Joscha has an exceptional ability to articulate how the human mind works. He comes on the show to talk about the deeper metaphors within the Bible. Specifically, how the story of Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac, and God sacrificing Jesus, have an even more profound connection than many may realize. The discussion continues about how human cognition works and the value of emotions to guide a person towards taking important actions, We also talk about what a potential endgame of A.I. looks like. Joscha lays out a case for how AI could create a future that helps humans lead fuller more satisfying lives where they can observe deeper truths about the world and move through challenges with ease. At times, this was a brain breaking conversation that felt like a dense onion, one that needs its layers peeled back over and over again. Govt. Overreach In Rural Communities With Chris Bennett

4/17/2024
Chris Bennett returns to the podcast. He is a writer for Farm Journal that has been on the show several times. Despite this, we have not delved into his mysterious and shrouded past. One of the things I always rely on for Chris is a cold, objective look at the way the government is interacting with its people, particularly in rural America. Today we talk about Chris' parents being missionaries in southeast Arkansas and eventually moving to Jordan of all places. We also talk about some of the big issues going on in the world today, including conflict in the Middle East, how high trust networks amongst small communities are being lost, and whether the United States is still a Christian culture. The Future Of A.I. With Jim Rutt

3/27/2024
Jim Rutt is the former CEO of Network Solutions and a graduate of MIT and now is a leader in the Game B Movement. Jim and Vance discuss the importance of understanding the basics of artificial intelligence and its potential implications. Jim discusses his experience with using Chat GPT to write movie screenplays, mentioning that it can produce a semi-professional mid-grade screenplay in 20 hours compared to 500 hours for a human. He is also in favor of self-driving cars, citing their potential to help elderly people who are no longer safe to drive. Jim mentions the "Foom" theory, where AI becomes 1000 times smarter than humans in a short period of time, and the "slow takeoff" theory, where AI gradually becomes more intelligent over time. He also proposes the idea of "Liquid democracy" as a potential solution to the current governance structure, but acknowledges it is a long shot to implement. How Our Family Stories Shape Us - Elizabeth Stone

3/13/2024
Fordham University English Professor Elizabeth Stone teaches the literature of immigration and memoir, and shares her insights on family stories as well as lesser-known figures in American history. Among them are Georgina Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, who transformed the Statue of Liberty from a rundown and failed lighthouse to a world famous symbol of welcome to immigrants, and Pierre Toussaint, a 19th century Haitian immigrant who became a wealthy and well-known hairdresser to rich and famous New Yorkers, and was set on the road to sainthood in 1997 by Pope John Paul II. Elizabeth and Vance discuss the importance of telling one's story to reformulate the narrative of their life, particularly in the context of inherited farmland and the emotional weight of family legacy.
