Former NBA guard Austin Rivers’ comments about it being easier for NBA players to play football than it would be for NFL players to play basketball is the latest and loudest version of a debate that’s been raging on forever. As a former hooper myself, I have my own thoughts (and biases!) on the matter, but I set out to end the debate once and for all by putting together a football team comprised ENTIRELY of current NBA players. A record-breaking NCAA Tournament that saw Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks cap off their undefeated season with a national title has many basketball fans going through hoops withdrawal, but WNBA season is right around the corner! The 1980s NBA was dominated by the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, but 1 team managed to have a more dominant title run than either of them: the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers! Philly’s own Tanya Morris of Mom Your Business joins me to talk about one of the league’s most forgotten championship teams! Tanya tells me how her hometown team caught her attention initially by acquiring the legendary Julius Erving. We also discuss the weird circumstances that led to Dr. J going to the 76ers and his immediate impact! While the Doctor was certainly the biggest name on the team, the 76ers slowly surrounded him with an incredible supporting cast of Hall of Fame-level talent. Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney, and more played important roles for the perennial Eastern Conference contenders, but they are mostly forgotten today so we show them some love! Speaking of underrated stars, Tanya talks about what it was like when the 76ers got the final piece of their championship puzzle, Moses Malone. She tells me how great he was prior to coming to Philly, how the city reacted to his acquisition, and how the move compares to Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors. Then, after years of getting close but coming up short, the 76ers have a historic regular season and playoff run that leads to an NBA title! Tanya talks about the excitement of watching that in real-time, how it felt when the final buzzer sounded, and her level of optimism about the team moving forward. Unfortunately, that core group of 76ers never reached that level again. We talk about the injuries and bad moves that led to the franchise going from potential dynasty to one of the worst in the league. We couldn’t talk about Philadelphia 76ers basketball without talking about Allen Iverson. Clearly, AI was an incredible player and cultural icon, but Tanya tells me just how much love the city has for him! My dog, Kobe, normally handles all my NFL picks, but I’ve decided to see how I stack up against him using this week’s NFL Divisional Round games! Not only do we both make picks, but I also provide some light analysis as well as a few storylines to pay attention to! The first game is the Houston Texans versus the Baltimore Ravens. Texans rookie QB C.J. Stroud has had an incredible season, including last week’s performance against the Browns. But can he do enough to overcome MVP frontrunner Lamar Jackson and the Ravens? Then, we look at the Green Bay Packers versus the San Francisco 49ers. This one brings back memories! Can the Packers make some more and pull off a second straight upset this postseason? Or are the 49ers just too powerful? The Detroit Lions versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is probably the most lowkey matchup of the weekend. Can the Lions use an extra caffeinated Dan Campbell to build on their newfound playoff success? Or will Baker Mayfield shock the world? Also, I give some love to an underappreciated future Hall of Famer! We finish up with the marquee matchup of the weekend, the Buffalo Bills versus the Kansas City Chiefs! These two know each other well and it hasn’t gone Buffalo’s way when they’ve matched up in the playoffs before, but can the Bills take advantage of a down year for the Chiefs offense to get over the hump?
