In the past few years what it means to be a collegiate athlete has changed dramatically ever since the NCAA changed it rules regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Previously, student athletes were not allowed to profit off of their own NIL, but now they are, which has led to a rise of brand deals being promoted on social media and other collaborations of the sort. Just recently, USAT has announced the creation of the Watch Us Thrive Collective for NCAA women's triathlon. On the podcast this week Grace Norman, who is an ambassador for this program, tells us about what it is, as well as how it helps support the goal triathlon becoming a fully fledged NCAA championship sport. In our second interview, we hear from Kennedy Calcagno, who just finished her freshman year doing triathlon at TCU. Not only has she had an NIL deal herself, but she also took a business class this year all about NIL. She explains to us how she went about getting a deal, what she had to do, and the various types of opportunities that are available to student athletes. Gina Sereno is a professional short course triathlete for team USA, as well as an engineer for NASA. She got her start in elite level sports competing on the track and cross country teams at the University of Michigan, where she became BIG10 champion. Recently she won the arena games race in Montreal, and will soon be racing the same format in London. She also has been racing at the world cup and WTCS level! In this Interview she tells us about what her journey has been like from starting triathlon in USAT's college recruitment program to now, being among the nation's best. Many of us know Colleen Quigley as an Olympic steeple chaser for team USA, or maybe from her instagram posts featuring #fastbraidfriday. Recently however, she has decided to step on to the triathlon scene after years spent swimming and biking when sidelined by injuries. Ahead of St. Anthony's Triathlon this upcoming weekend, we had the pleasure of speaking with returning guest, Julie Walker, as well as Susan Daniels. Julie is the founder and president of Atlanta Tri Sisters (ATS), and Susan is the former race director of ten years for St. Anthony's. Susan has continued to work in the multi sport industry, and in this episode, she tells us about what makes St. Anthony's triathlon so special, and all that she has done to foster a positive and encouraging community at the race. Julie gives us the perspective of a competitor, explaining how she got her start in triathlon and what it is that keeps her wanting to come back to this race year after year. This week we got to hear first hand from Tamara Jewett and Nicole Falcaro about their awesome performances in Oceanside! They both break down how they felt and what their thoughts were upon finishing, as well as how these results might impact them going forward. Carissa Galloway is a woman who wears many hats. From race announcing at Disney and Ironmans, to writing a book, to working as a registered dietitian, she really does it all. Emily Shryock is a para triathlete competing for the USA on the world triathlon circuit. Although she is currently competing among the best in the sport, her journey as a para athlete actually began with rugby. She tells us about how valuable the sporting community was to her in learning how to navigate life as a wheelchair user, after battling the neurological effects of Lyme disease. Beyond that, we hear about her work at UT Austin within the disability cultural center, as well as life with her adorable canine companion, Maple! As athletes, we all know how much work goes in behind the scenes in order to perform come race day. We might not be as familiar, however, with just how much effort is put in to the organization of the events themselves. After her amazing second place finish, Haley got to interview Loreto Díaz, the race director of Challenge Puerto Varas. They discuss how she got into this work, as well as how she hopes to give back to the Chilean community through the race. Beyond that, Loreto touches on the unique perspective that she brings to race directing as a woman and a mother. Loreto has big aspirations for her race directing team, and for Puerto Varas as a competition destination, so we can't wait to see how that develops in the future! 100-milers and IRONMANs are VERY different. In terms of training, mindset, and distance - these races are nowhere alike. So what would it look like to be an athlete for both? Well, Lucy Bartholomew is. Looking at the 2023 season, it seems like Lucy may race both Kona in October, and UTMB in September. While you may know Shannon Spake from her time as a NASCAR reporter, or an NFL reporter for Fox Sports, we know her from triathlon. This week, Haley and Alyssa welcome Tiencia James onto the pod. Tiencia is a multisport coach and accomplished age group triathlete, mom, and emergency room physician. She also happens to be coached by our very own Haley Chura. As Women’s NCAA Triathlon nears the monumental benchmark of becoming a fully fledged NCAA Championship Sport, we check in with one of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with a Division I Varsity Team. This week, Alyssa and Haley welcome the Head Coach of Delaware State University, Hannah Loftus, as well as sophomore student-athlete Chara Hinds. As a very new women's triathlon program, Chara talks about what it was like to join the team with no "older athletes" to guide her. As she explains, this helped to build a certain camaraderie between the team members.
