If you are a football fan, especially of the NFL and the Oakland Raiders, this gentleman needs no introduction. He was drafted by the Raiders in 1971 out of Bowling Green State after a sterling performance in the Senior Bowl and was the 1971 AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was involved in one of the most famous plays in sports and NFL history, the Immaculate Reception play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1972 AFC Playoffs. He was also in the nostalgic Sea of Hands game against the Miami Dolphins in the 1974 AFC Playoffs. He was a Super Bowl winner in Super Bowl XI, in which he made a momentum-changing goal -line tackle that forced a Minnesota Vikings fumble recovered by the Raiders, who handily defeated the Vikings 32-14. One of the fastest linebackers of his era, known for his big playmaking ability and coverage skills, he made 5 Pro Bowls over his 13 NFL seasons with Oakland from 1971 to 1979 and then Buffalo from 1980 to 1983. After his football playing days were done he has enjoyed a very successful career in the logistics business. In 2018, he was inducted into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 1973 NFL Draft by Miami as an offensive lineman out of Duke, where in addition to being a football All American in 1971, he was also an ACC heavyweight wrestling champion in 1970 and 1971. He played in the last three Super Bowls that the Dolphins have appeared in, the last of which was 1985. He played 13 NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins from 1973 to 1985 and was named a four consecutive Pro Bowls from 1981 to 1984. He was also named to the all pro second team for the 1981 to 1983 seasons and was first team all pro in 1984 when he enjoyed his greatest season as a professional. He has been inducted into the Duke Athletic Hall of Fame, the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Israel. He was also inducted into the Miami Dolphins Walk of Honor in 2014 and the St. Thomas University of Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. He was listed as one of the top 50 players in the first 50 years of the franchise by the Miami Dolphins. After his football playing days were done he enjoyed a very successful legal career in Miami as both an attorney and then as a county judge from 1994 to 2022. Along with his daughter Holly Newman Greenberg, he's the co-author of the forthcoming book, Warrior Judge, One Man's Journey from Gridiron to Gavel, a memoir that will be released in early 2024. He was drafted in 1964 by San Diego in the 14th round of the AFL Draft and by Philadelphia in the 13th round of the NFL Draft from Los Angeles State. He started his pro football career as a defensive end with the San Diego Chargers in 1965. During his 3rd season with San Diego he was cut and then signed with the Buffalo Bills, where he played 5 seasons at defensive end, offensive tackle and center. He retired after the 1971 season with the Bills. Then the Miami Dolphins traded for his rights and Dolphins coaches Don Shula and Monte Clark were able to convince him to unretire. He served as the team’s long snapper and was the backup to future Hall of Fame center Jim Langer that year for the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, who completed a PERFECT 17-0 season by defeating the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII. He played 12 AFL NFL and WFL seasons and finished his NFL football career in 1974 with the New York Jets. He also played parts of two seasons with the World Football League’s Jacksonville Sharks and Jacksonville Express. After his football playing days were done he enjoyed a very successful career in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the real estate and appraisal industry. If you are a baseball fan, especially of the Houston Astros and great minor league affiliates like the Round Rock Express and the San Antonio Missions, this gentleman needs no introduction. He was named the President of Business Operations for the Houston Astros in May 2013, becoming one of the youngest team presidents in baseball. His time in Houston included the best stretch of on-field success in franchise history, as the Astros captured the 2017 World Series title as well as the American League pennant in 2019, and the creation of the Astros Hall of Fame, among several other notable renovations and accomplishments which will forever be felt by Astros fans and Minute Maid Park visitors. He grew up in the Astrodome as a bat boy for the Astros while his father and Hall of Famer Nolan pitched in the Astrodome in the 1980s. He later pitched collegiately at the University of Texas and Texas Christian University, winning two Southwest Conference titles. He pitched two seasons in the Texas Rangers organization after being drafted in the 17th round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He became the sixth member, and first executive, to be inducted into the Round Rock Express Hall of Fame on August 16, 2019. He was also the executive producer of the amazing and widely acclaimed baseball movie, Facing Nolan, which I personally recommend. Fantastic movie. Presently he is the CEO of Ryan-Sanders Sports & Entertainment. Obviously, along with his brother Reese, he is one of Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan’s two sons. Frick Award Winner “for major contributions to the game of baseball” in 2000. He was hired by the Cincinnati Reds in 1974 to replace Al Michaels and alongside the legendary Joe Nuxhall they formed the beloved “Marty and Joe “ combination for several decades. Notable calls include being behind the mic in his first Reds game in 1974 to call Hank Aaron’s record tying 714th home run to tie Babe Ruth; hit number 4,192 in 1985 by Pete Rose to pass Ty Cobb on the all-time hit list; three World Series wins in 1975, 1976, and 1990; eight no-hitters, one of which was a Perfect Game by Tom Browning, and another was the only one thrown by Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, as well as milestone home runs numbers 500 and 600 by Ken Griffey Jr. In 2007 he had the privilege of calling a Reds game with his son Thom. He called his last game for the Reds on September 26, 2019. In 2019 he was also the first Reds non-player to be inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame. My guest today is Cory Morrow, a Texas country singer who has an amazing story of redemption and recovery. He is a longtime college fraternity brother of mine and a Texas country music icon. He began his musical career at Houston Memorial High School in the late 1980’s and he furthered his education at Texas Tech University in the early 1990’s, where his dream of becoming a country singer and songwriter really took off. His first album, self-titled, was released in 1997 and his latest album Whiskey and Pride was released in 2018. His journey includes a successful recovery from drugs and alcohol, and the rebirth of his Faith in GOD, and his Lord, Jesus Christ. He also helped found the Red Dirt Music Scene in Austin, in addition to releasing 16 albums in his storied career. He is involved in raising money for different charities in our Great State of Texas including Rock the Red Kettle every November with the Salvation Army of Austin, Texas. They can be found at Rock the Red Kettle 2022 - Austin Area Command (salvationarmyaustin.org) . He is a board member on the Majesty Outdoors foundation for kids without fathers.
