Brittany Halstead: Replay Polo's Founder & Visionary

3/8/2024
On this Episode of Outside The Boards, I am thrilled to welcome founder and visionary of Replay Polo, Brittany Halstead. In 2016, Brittany laid the foundation for Replay Polo, a transformative initiative inspired by her extraordinary journey with a polo pony. The genesis of Replay Polo traces back to 2014 when Brittany, riding and training in Argentina with Olympic riders and high-goal polo trainers, experienced a near-fatal car accident. Suffering a traumatic brain injury, she defied the odds by miraculously recovering from a two-week coma. The pivotal moment in Brittany's recovery came when Luis Ansola, professional polo player and manager of Louisville Polo Club, bestowed upon her a retired polo pony named Fanta. This equine companion became the inaugural Replay Polo pony, marking the beginning of Brittany's mission to forge connections between these remarkable horses and individuals in need. Brittany's unique insight led her to recognize the exceptional qualities of polo ponies, emphasizing their gentle demeanor and rideability. This assessment positioned them as ideal candidates for new careers and ignited Brittany's commitment to repurposing retired polo and racehorses. With a diverse background spanning various equine disciplines—walking horses, quarter horses, dressage, hunter/jumper, showjumping, polo, western pleasure, thoroughbred racing, and therapeutic riding—Brittany is uniquely equipped to operate the repurposing pipeline and oversee instructional elements at Replay Polo. Certified as a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship Instructor and Mentor, Brittany's commitment to equine well-being extends to her certification in equine massage therapy through The Animal Rehab Institute. Her wide-ranging contacts with owners and trainers position her as a sales agent for polo ponies and racehorses actively engaged in their careers. Replay Polo's mission goes beyond repurposing; retired horses are donated to the 501(c)3 organization, undergo retraining, and are adopted out to lead fulfilling lives with a renewed sense of purpose. Brittany Halstead's resilience, expertise, and unwavering dedication make Replay Polo a beacon of hope in the equestrian community, showcasing the transformative power of the human-equine connection under her visionary leadership. Tim Gannon: Wellington Polo Tour

5/12/2023
On this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast, I am really excited to introduce to you one of America’s polo legends and culinary businessman, Mr. Tim Gannon. Outback is a synonym for polo in the United States. During the late 90s and early 2000s, Tim Gannon’s Outback Polo Team managed to win five US Open Championships, the first team to achieve such a feat. Led by Tim Gannon, who has been an active polo player since 1992, the team was one of the greatest sponsors of the game in America. As a recognition, the United States Polo Association honored him in 1999 with the USPA Sponsor of the Year award for his contribution to polo. After winning back to-back US Opens in 1999 and 2000, Outback Polo Team won their third US Open Championship in a row in 2001, an achievement no other polo team has ever managed to replicate. However, Tim’s passion for polo surpassed the US as he played actively in England, Spain, Argentina, Dubai and Uruguay too. Throughout the years, Outback Polo Team was represented by some of the best polo players in the world. Polo legend Adolfo Cambiaso may be the most important one, but other players such as Lolo Castagnola, Sebastián Merlos, Mike Azzaro and Julio Arellano also wore Outback's jersey. As Gannon was an early promoter of women’s polo, the late Sunny Hale also played for his team and won the US Open too. In 2013, as a recognition for what he did for the sport during the past decades, Gannon was inducted into the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame. Tim passed his passion for polo to his son Chris, who is also a polo player and continues his fathers legacy. In 2021, Tim Gannon along with other field patrons started the Welling Polo Tour. A 16-Goal league in Wellington Florida that runs from January through April. Now in its third season, the tour will be a part of the USPA Florida Circuit 16-Goal Super Series, which includes as many as 16 participating teams. Tim has had a incredible polo and business journey that is worthy of a documentary and taught MBA schools. I had a great time speaking with Tim and feel honored to call him my friend. I really hope you enjoy this podcast. Louis Devaleix: La Fe Polo Team

4/3/2023
On this Episode of Outside The Boards, we are excited to welcome La Fe Polo Team Patron and Player, Louis Devaleix, one of today’s most visible and talked about players and teams in professional polo. Taking his first polo lesson just three years ago, Louis Devaleix is preparing for his team’s return to Florida high-goal polo season. Born in France but growing up in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, before coming to the United States, Devaleix’s newfound passion for polo launched the adrenaline junkie from the golf course to the polo field seemingly overnight. Surrounding himself with elite athletes including 10-goaler Hilario Ulloa and undisputed basketball legend and fellow golfer Michael Jordan, the 41-year-old has already achieved a significant milestone in his budding polo career, raising the 2021 and 2022 East Coast Open trophy. Originally only planning to compete in the 18-goal season, Devaleix made the last-minute decision to go all in with La Fe in the GAUNTLET OF POLO® and pursue the most prestigious titles in American polo. Although Devaleix does not fit the typical polo player mold at a brawny 6’4”, he is a strong defensive presence and devoted student of the game. Humbled by the sacrifices of his pros which have allowed him to play polo, Devaleix is soaking up every opportunity to learn from their experience while finding the time to bond over Argentine asados and Brazilian barbeques. Since living in the United States full time he balances his career in healthcare IT with his young son and now a full polo schedule. Quickly becoming an ambassador for the sport both locally and internationally, Devaleix’s path has introduced his family and friends to polo through Global Polo TV and even inspired his business partner to take up the sport. Although coming in as a 20-goal team, La Fe’s commitment to their game is evident as Devaleix aims to make an even stronger showing intheir second year competing in the GAUNTLET. In 2022, the Oak Brook Polo Club will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and will be returning to its original and masterpiece field, the Cecil Smith Field. To honor this historic occasion, the Oak Brook Polo Club has invited Club friends and family to share stories and their most fondest memories of visiting and playing at Oak Brook. Join as we take listeners down memory lane with some of the sport’s household names while they share their experiences at Oak Brook and the impact the Club and its founder’s have played on their lives. Welcome to this Outside The Boards special podcast edition, with your host Danny O’Leary. My guests on today’s podcast need no introduction, the legendary Jorie Butler Kent, daughter of Paul Butler, and her daughter Reute Butler. Both women are gifted riders and polo players themselves with multiple accolades tied to their names and success on the field. Jorie won numerous horse show and jumping event championships by the time she was 17. From 1967 to 1979, Jorie served as the director of the Butler’s Sports Core where she built and managed the Oak Brook Bath & Tennis Club and Oak Brook Polo Club. Jorie continued her interest in polo and would become the first woman member along side Sue Sally Hale to be rated by the USPA in 1971. Her daughter Reute also found success on the field having organized and played in Oak Brook’s first ever Junior Challenge Trophy and both played and sponsored two Sun Ranch polo Teams. Reute is currently the President of the Friends of Conversation, an organization founded by her mother Jorie 1982. one of the world's earliest leaders in the development of community conservation in Masai Mara of Kenya.
