Cats are mystifying creatures... Luffy took off! He slipped out the door while Danielle was cleaning the outdoor cat dishes. Danielle had sad news to share, her 'baby' Loki passed away. He'd been ill and fighting it, but it finally overtook him and he went to cat heaven. Danielle talks about what happened and the effect it had on her other cats. Elizabeth talked about a new way the vet revealed to her about pilling a cat and her cats' weird behavior. It's time for the holidays and Danielle and Elizabeth dressed up for their 52nd episode, yes, it's been a year since they started this podcast for cat lovers! Danielle's antlers weren't behaving but they were still fun anyway... Danielle filled us all in on what happened to Loki after he licked the poisonous plant - he's fine now, but it was terrifying. Suffice it to say that Danielle checked every plant in her house, and if they posed a threat to cats, they were gone immediately. They went on to chat about their other cats and their strange cat behavior. They went on to talk about how fun their year of podcasting is, and how they plan to take a break because it is a lot of work. Danielle and Elizabeth talk cats, fleas and worms. Yucky, but necessary. Danielle noticed fleas and worms on and in her outside cat, and the steps she took to rid her environment of them. She was pretty disgusted by those little cat tormentors, I have to say, Danielle keeps a very clean house so she was shocked when she saw signs of fleas and worms! They talked about when to take a cat to the vet and when to administer the worm medication yourself, and of course they talked about outside cats and reunion stories, as well as Tommy's Cat Rescue. Yes, a new vet at the practice told her she could give Zyrtec to Cushi, after nearly a year of her giving Zyrtec to Max, LOL. Mitch shared a number of tips and strategies, and they all told stories of cats who disappeared but returned as if nothing had happened, in typical cat like fashion. Mitch trained with the Missing Animal Response Network, and you may be able to find someone in your area who's been through the program and can help you find a lost pet. Brianna shared her deep love for cats, her passion for crocheting adorable cat figurines, and her unique business, Kitten Kazoedle, that creates mini replicas of cats using their own fur. Elizabeth's daughter, Lindsey, joined Danielle and Elizabeth on this episode. Lindsey is a cat lover (of course!) who recently returned from a trip to Japan. She talked about the cats in Japan, where to find them, and who feeds them. It was a short segue to talk about Max and his favorite blanket, and Lindsey's experience helping with him last winter over the holidays. She also brought up Lily, who was totally cat stand-offish until they took her to vet, where she got her lumps of stegosaurus fur shaved off of her back. Lily associated that relief with Lindsey and regularly asks her for pets now!Danielle talked about Thor and his fur issues, and how she's getting him ready for a trip to the groomer again. Elizabeth recalled Max's experience with a groomer and having nail caps put on when he was scratching himself raw. Unfortunately, he found a way around them and still was able to scratch. They talked about different ways to administer medications to their cats, Danielle has a tried and true method. The conversation moved to chipmunks in the house and what they eat, among other things. They also talked about a cat available through the Pet Adoption Network, her photo was put on Instagram by Tommys Cats Rescue, which does trap, neuter, release work with cats. Maribeth Decker joined Danielle and Elizabeth to talk about living harmoniously with cats and dogs. Maribeth is a pet intuitive so she tunes in with her pets and has many tips on how to keep the household peaceful. She talked about how she introduced new pets into her household, including bringing a dog into a household of cats! Danielle touched on how she rescued a dog from traffic, for the second time, and took him to the police station so the owners could be found. Danielle let a dog into her car! Danielle and Elizabeth started chatting about cats in the rain - do they love it or hate it? Danielle mentioned that she has a new outdoor cat, and they revisited the idea of letting their cats go outside. Then Sarah Curcio was introduced, and she started with how she loves to adopt black animals. It runs in her family! She's also a pet sitter. Her latest cat, Mitzi, came from a hoarding situation, but she's well adjusted and she doesn't even want to go outside. Sarah talked about treating a cat's skin rash by switching its food to gluten free, and how her cat now is sensitive to chicken. Elizabeth talked about Max, and how he didn't have a food allergy, now he's on Zyrtech, Cyclosporine and Dexamethasone for itching. Sarah talked about how her boyfriend trained her cat with cat cookies. Cat cookies? They talked about cats loving treats, then went into how social cats are. Danielle and Elizabeth were joined by Melanie Savage, who hails from Ontario, and works with people in need of social services. She's found herself getting assigned to clients who have cats, which is wonderful because Melanie loves feline friends. She finds a connection to her clients through the cats, because who doesn't love talking about cats?! The discussion centered around people in rough situations finding comfort from their cats, and even forgoing treating their own medical needs so they could take care of their cats. Also how cats are easier and usually less expensive than dogs, but yet are still perceptive to their owner's need for closeness. Melanie talked about services for people who may not be able to care for their cats, such as My Grandfather's Cat, a service in Canada that re-homes pets whose owners have passed. She also brought up Community Veterinary Outreach, which supports those individuals who are experiencing homelessness or the risk of losing their housing who have cats, who have dogs, and they provide pro bono veterinary care and also provide some primary health care at their vet clinics. Great news for Ottawans, Melanie is working on opening her own practice soon to support folks with pet loss. Erica Messer of Wolfie's Wish made a return appearance to talk with Danielle and Elizabeth about the power music has to ease anxiety in felines and others. Erica treated everyone to her excellent harp playing in this episode too! Danielle talked about her cat Thor and his anxiety issues and what she did to help him. She's such a great cat mom :) Erica talked about using her cats as test subjects for experiments - no, not that kind! She's testing them to gauge their interest in music. They also discussed the effects of music on all types of animals and humans, and how to fine tune the rhythms and vibrations to be the most pleasing. Erica talked about her YouTube channel with soothing music, it really has beautiful videos of her playing the harp and she's singing in some of them, you can find her on YouTube as @ericamesserharpist Danielle described how Thor was having trouble and they had to shave him, then give him happy pills. It used to be you threw a bowl of dry cat food on the back porch and everyone was happy, but those days have passed and now we treat our cats like our babies! Danielle and Elizabeth were amazed at Ross Hewitt's life story and his experience with cats growing up that led him to create an animated film for kids called Kris the Cat. His Mom was a cat lover, his Dad went along, and they ended up with what some may consider a rather large number of cats, most of whom slept on the bed with them. How many and how did that happen? Listen to find out! And yes, it of course inspired Danielle to consider expanding her cat tribe, we're just waiting for the next one to show up at her door! Kris the Cat was based on an Icelandic folk tale - just a little side note, Danielle and Elizabeth are really glad they weren't women living in that time and place, LOL. Ross also touched on his career as a physician and how science helps us deal with infectious diseases. Then Danielle led him to disclose his first acting gig, and how he wove his love of theater into his life as a physician. And his love of cats, of course!
