The Sunshine Swing is almost here as the ATP and WTA Tours gear up for the one-two hit of Indian Wells and the Miami Open. In the final week of build up events to Tennis Paradise out in Palm Springs, Stefanos Tsitsipas (with his mystery racket in tow) captured his first ever 500 title in Dubai to re-enter the ATP Top 10 whilst Emma Navarro dished out a very rare sighting - a 60 60 double bagel in a WTA Final at the Merida Open. There were also wins for Tomas Machac, Laslo Djere and Jessica Pegula who got a new tennis fan in the form of Oscar winner and Hollywood A-Lister Matthew McConaughey watching on from the cheap seats in Austin. We also had a look to see what Jannik Sinner has been up to whilst serving his doping ban (clue - it involves fashion shows and ski trips) plus react to the news his Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award nomination has been withdrawn and seemingly replaced by his rival Carlos Alcaraz. Another blockbuster week on the ATP and WTA Tours come to an end with Joel, Kim and Chris on hand to dissect it all at Tennis Weekly HQ. Mirra Andreeva came of age in Dubai with a string of sterling performances to crack the Top 10 for the first time. Andrey Rublev also rediscovered his mojo in Doha with his first 500 title since 2022 whilst Jack Draper also made the final on return from injury. Sebastien Baez defended his title in a raucous Rio where there were epic doubles scenes as Matos and Melo became the first Brazilian champions of the event in front of a packed home crowd (who said doubles was dead??). Off court, the fallout continues for both Jannik Sinner and Elena Rybakina. Novak Djokovic had his say on the Italian's doping ban and said 'favouritism' was at play whilst WADA said it was 'a million miles away from doping'. And the gang talk about the issue of safeguarding in tennis as Emma Raducanu was put into an uncomfortable situation in Dubai where she had to ask for a stalker to be removed during her match against Karolina Muchova. In a BREAKING NEWS edition of Tennis Weekly we cover the the latest in the Jannik Sinner doping affair after it was announced that Jannik Sinner has accepted a 3 month ban from WADA for testing positive for colostabol last year. The ban is effective from 9th February meaning he will miss the Sunshine Double but return in time for the French Open and Wimbledon as well as a warm up tournament at home in Rome. The case was set to go to trial on 16th and 17th of April and WADA were pushing for a 1-2 year ban finding Sinner was not at 'no fault or negligence' that his experienced team could have avoided Jannik Sinner being 'contaminated' with colostabol, a steroid, that led to two positive tests last year. Sinner was suspended for a matter of hours and days when both tests came to light and successfully appealed both decisions allowing to complete a full season and win two more Grand Slam titles. Joel and Chris discuss how the case was handled, why the change of heart for WADA as well as why it is possible for players to negotiate a ban that is so favourable to them that causes minimal disruption to their schedule and ranking. Tennis meets Super Bowl! It's been another memorable week on and off the tennis circuit as hot off the press Serena Williams graced all our TV screens crip walking (!) to Kendrik Lamar at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Back on the tour, Carlos Alcaraz caught a cold as well as his first ever indoor hard court title with a win in Rotterdam to equal Rafael Nadal, and Belinda Bencic enjoying another successful week in Abu Dhabi, this time as a Mother, to win her 9th career title in just her fourth event back from maternity leave. Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov stormed to the Dallas Open title, defeating 3 Top 10 players en route and reminding us all of his immense talents, whilst Anastasia Potapova clinched the Translyvania Open, an event at which we saw one of the most successful WTA players of the 2010s, Simona Halep, retire. The main focus was one particular incident between Belgium and Chile that quite literally left Christian Garin floored when Zizou Bergs charged at him and collided at a change of ends. The Australian Open Finals are SET. Alexander Zverev will face defending champion and World No.1 Jannik Sinner for a chance to win his first Major. The big news from the semifinals was the retirement of Novak Djokovic after losing the first set against the tall german. He was suffering from the same muscle tear that affected him in his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz and knew going into the match it was unlikely he would be able to finish it. Despite his best efforts on court the Australian crowd booed off their 10 time champion and 24 time grand slam champion for cutting short their afternoon of tennis which reflected badly on the tournament and the aussie fans. Zverev will face 2 time major champion Jannik Sinner in the Final who defeated Ben Shelton after a spirited first set from the american. Sinner steamrolled the last two sets but was seen limping in the third set. Joel and Chris ask - will he be fit for the final and predict who the champion will be on Sunday. On the women’s side there was a HUGE upset and come from behind win for American Madison Keys. Keys a former finalist at slam level previously 8 years ago at the US Open will hope to go one better on Saturday against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Keys caused the biggest upset on the women’s side when she saved match point and then recovered from 5-7 down in a super tie break to secure her spot in the final by defeated Iga Swiatek. Swiatek was so close to setting up a 1 vs 2 final but with the loss Sabalenka will remain the World Number 1 no matter the result on Saturday. Sabalenka will be going for the three-peat and the one thing we know for sure is that there will be some big hitting on Rod Laver in the final! The Australian Open has begun and boy has it been a dramatic star down under! Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev scrape past Wild Cards to make the second round. This marks the first win for Novak Djokovic with new coach Sir Andy Murray in his box. The team got the win but it was't pretty or easy for the GOAT of tennis and his former nemesis. The 2025 tennis is upon us and already there is a lot to cover! Novak Djokovic suffered his worst defeat in over 20 years to comeback king Reilly Opelka and Nick Kyrgios's comeback had a knock back as he went out in the first round of Brisbane. Elsewhere Coco Gauff secured her second consecutive straight sets win over Iga Swiatek as USA claimed another United Cup victory with the help of US Open finalist Taylor Fritz. There were lighter moments as Andy Murray missed the first week of the season and his coaching duties of Novak Djokovic because he was skiing and Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur got engaged. They also make some grand slam predictions (eek!) and preview this week's tournaments as Australian Open qualies get under way at Melbourne Park. It's another Tennis Book Club, and in this edition we are joined by USA Today Bestselling Author Jenni L. Walsh. Jenni has written over 12 books including the bestselling 'Unsinkable' and now the future smash hit 'Ace, Marvel, Spy: A Novel of Alice Marble'. ‘Ace, Marvel Spy’ is based on the life of a very real, very incredible Alice Marble. She was a Trailblazer, superstar, activist, and spy! On the tennis court, Alice was an American tennis player who won 18 Grand Slam championships between 1936 and 1940: five in singles (including Wimbledon), six in women's doubles, and seven in mixed doubles. She was ranked world No. 1 in 1939. Marble was the Associated Press Athlete of the Year in 1939 and 1940. In 1964, Marble was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. She settled in Palm Desert, California, where she taught tennis until her death. One of her students was Billie Jean King. Billie called the book "A smashing success!” and Jenni joins the TW team to tell us about her process, her tennis memories and unpacks the incredible life of a tennis icon! Jenni also gives us a preview of her next book and as always she can't escape telling Chris and Kim how she takes her tea.
