Live Jam Session at Mile 222 in the Grand Canyon with Jed Alan, Cricket, Wiley, Pauly & Kirk
5/27/2021
I myself have returned yet again from the mighty Grand Canyon where I rowed my 2nd of 4 Commercial trips for CanX or Canyon Explorations. It was warm, windy and low water but we had a hell of a time nonetheless.
Our trip was so stacked with musical talent that I decided to record another live set for you all to enjoy instead of our normal interviews. The music from today’s episode is coming to you live from Mile 222 in the Grand Canyon, just 4 miles above the Diamond Creek take-out. When we arrived at that beach, which was our last camp of our 15 day trip, a few of the GCMRC or (Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research) staff were just finishing up a photo mapping project so we saw it as an opportunity to sit down and play some tunes before they had to move on downstream.
The guides performing live today are, Kirk from GCMRC with his Banjo, Jed Alan (buy his music here) on the vocals, guitar & harmonica, Cricket with that amazing voice singing and playing the guitar, Wiley Green also on vocals and shredding the mandolin and even our infamous trip leader Pauly Borichevsky rounding out the last of the session with his amazing voice and talent on the guitar! Songs played are mostly originals and some covers from their favorite artists. I recorded only with my iPhone and was THOROUGHLY impressed with the quality of sound that I was able to capture.
I fucking loved these tunes and know you will too…
And without further adieu, a live performance at Mile 222 in the Grand Canyon...

Eddy Out in Blacktail Canyon -- Live Music by Jimmy Mac, Cricket, and Jed Alan
4/29/2021
What’s up everyone, how’s it going, hope you’re doing well! Thanks for tuning back into another episode here of the podcast.
I just returned from the Mighty Grand Canyon where I was a commercial river guide on a 16 day Hiker Special trip with Canyons Exploration or CANX.
It was such an epic trip. Our weather was overall sunny and warm with the expected spring gusty winds. Our guests were so damn amazing and the guides were just fucking incredible.
Speaking of guides, today’s episode will be a little different this week. I decided to change things up for you all and offer up some acoustic tunes instead of our usual interview. The music from today’s episode is coming to you live from BlackTail Canyon at Mile 120 in the heart of the Grand Canyon.
Blacktail itself is a special place for both river runners and native people. The narrow canyon walls offer an incredible space for playing music, telling tales, or hearing the faint echo of the canyon wren.
The guides performing live today are Jimmy Mac aka Ringtail Jimmy, Amy Rust aka Cricket, and Jed Gantert aka Uncle Jedler. Songs played are mostly originals and some covers from their favorite artists.
I recorded only with my iPhone for this performance and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the sound that I was able to capture. I loved these tunes and know you will too.
And without further adieu, a live performance in Blacktail Canyon.

About Nouria:
Meet Nouria, a bad-ass kayaker who’s definitely on the short-list of the most progressive kayakers out there, regardless of gender. Nouria Newman combines a surprising adeptness at playing on white waters with an endless thirst for discovering new horizons.
While most paddlers struggle to master just one sport, Nouria Newman combines several of them. She competes in canoe, freestyle and extreme kayaking, and excels in each and every one of them. Her achievements in the various disciplines prove she’s one of a kind.
In 2013 she won the Ottawa XL, one of the most important freestyle world meetings, followed that by taking K-1 silver at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, and just a few months later she was crowned extreme kayaking world champion. The following year she won team gold at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and team bronze at the European Championships. In 2016 she was runner-up at the Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championships and in 2017 took first place at the GoPro Mountain Games Steep Creek Championships.
As if competition wasn't enough for the seemingly inexhaustible athlete, Nouria ventured on a solo kayaking trip down the Tsarap, Zanskar and Indus rivers in the Himalayas in August 2018. During the week-long adventure she says she "cried, laughed and talked to myself like a crazy person."
It’s hard to understand how such an outstanding athlete would have any spare time to partake in any 'normal' activities, but she also has a masters in journalism and political science from Sciences Po Toulouse. “Journalism is actually very similar to kayaking,” she says. “You always have to adapt!” But that’s Nouria, always where you least expect her.

Reta is an all around whitewater paddling enthusiast that specializes in whitewater stand up paddling. She has paddled on rivers in Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, Costa Rica and Ecuador.
In addition to SUP you can always find Reta going with the flow; singing her way down a river behind the oars, working on crushing bigger lines in her kayak or trying to roll an OC1. Reta just wants to be on the water!
Reta is the founder of CANRVRSUP Instructor Collective. She started the collective to bring instructors together in hopes of supporting her passion to grow a safe community of River Stand Up Paddlers through quality instruction and training. As head instructor and Paddle Canada Certified Instructor Trainer, she plans to work with all the collective instructors to provide high quality training for all students wanting to take courses related to SUP.
Reta fell in love with SUP after she was first introduced to it in 2010. It is a sport that anyone can enjoy and the sport can be as challenging as you want it to be as you progress from flat water on lakes to whitewater on the rivers.

Nadia sits at the roundtable helping push Wilderness Medicine Forward with the Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative
-----------
About Nadia:
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Nadia was drawn to the Rockies of Colorado as a young adult. She began leading students on month long backpacking trips around the West for various outdoor education companies. Much to her surprise the only medical training that was required of her was basic first aid and CPR certifications.
After completing her first Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course in 1992 she recognized the broader need for a more robust, field-based, wilderness medicine curricula designed specifically for outdoor professionals. Nadia pursued this newfound passion with her usual infectious intensity, and began teaching WFR courses soon thereafter. Her fascination with medicine lead to her receiving an EMT certification in 1994 and subsequently volunteering on SAR and working in various emergency departments around Colorado.
Before founding Desert Mountain Medicine (DMM), Nadia worked for the Wilderness Education Association as an outdoor educator. She also attended Colorado State University and earned a B.S. in Natural Resource Management. Later she was asked to join Colorado Mountain College to help jump start their Outdoor Recreation Leadership program (ORL) in Leadville, CO after which she earned an M.S. in Forestry with an emphasis in Outdoor Recreation from Northern Arizona University. Her combined education and experience as a guide, outdoor educator, medical professional, and wilderness medicine instructor provided her with a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and perspective to develop and run DMM under her own unique vision in 1998.
After founding DMM Nadia became the EMS coordinator and EMT instructor for Colorado Mountain College, which inspired her to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) from Regis University. Nadia continued to work as an ER nurse while cultivating DMM and its community from a fledgling, one-woman operation to the expanding business that it is today.
Over two decade later, Nadia continues to contribute to the field of wilderness medicine as part of the Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WEMC) and as DMM’s Executive Director, focusing on curriculum development.

We start by getting to know JR:
JR's Thesis Movie "New World Water"
JR's Favorite Book Series: Wheel of Time
JR's Favorite Childhood Book: Coyote Stories
JR's mentor: Linda Montanti
Meet "No Trace" and "Unbreakable", the hikers JR met on the PCT back in 2015

We then move into and learn more about the project:
Blood of the West is the story of the Colorado River from Source to Sea, from its origins in the glacier carved valleys of the Rocky Mountains, through the iconic canyons and sandstone playgrounds of the Colorado Plateau, to its terminus south of the Mexican-American Border, where its mighty flows are reduced to just a trickle.
Told in eight parts, this documentary project will follow each of the Colorado’s main tributaries, including the Green, San Juan, and Virgin Rivers, from their headwaters to their confluence. As it follows the rivers downstream, it will follow the history of the watershed, tackle its present struggles, and speculate toward its possible future.
