Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Azucena is a self-advocate with Cerebral Palsy and a communications professional with over 10 years of experience in Communications/Public Relations. She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants who did not speak English at the time they received Azucena's diagnosis, which left them with many questions but very few resources in Spanish to understand how this diagnosis would affect her in the future. Thanks to this, Azucena learned the importance of having resources available in multiple languages, and she learned to advocate for herself and others with disabilities from an early age. Growing up, she became keenly aware of the beauty, barriers, and challenges of having a developmental disability in a world that has not always been welcoming to her needs and those of others with disabilities. This insight and first-hand experience motivate her to find policy solutions that address the systemic challenges that people with disabilities face when trying to access housing, employment, and other resources. Azucena graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communications and Political Science from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Over the span of her 10+ year career she has worked with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), NBC, SEIU California State Council and the Center for Policy Initiatives (CPI) in San Diego. She is a very active member of her community and board member of organizations such as the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) and California Policy Center for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (CPCIDD) In her free time, Azucena enjoys reading, walking, taking photos, traveling, spending time with her parents and hosting her podcast Parálisis Cerebral Respuestas (Cerebral Palsy Answers) where she interviews doctors and top specialists in the field of CP in Spanish to raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy among the Spanish speaking community. Throughout her life Leonka Kaluha has battled adversity in the form of bullying and judgment - simply for being herself. Despite these hardships, she continues to challenge herself to be the best she can be and getting involved with Special Olympics was her first step. After turning 18, Leonka registered for 5-pin bowling and swimming with Special Olympics Alberta – Calgary because she wanted to make new friends and stay active. She hasn’t looked back since. For Leonka, gaining confidence and loving herself have been her biggest challenges, but she has worked hard to overcome them. Lionel Migrino is an advocate and local photographer who identifies himself as a Filipinx Canadian living with cerebral palsy. Due to his intersecting identities, he understands that the world is not made for people like him. Photography has given him a voice and a platform to showcase how the world is through his lens. Lionel not only uses his talents to amplify his voice, but he also uses it to give a voice to the voiceless. He has participated in several community storytelling projects and recently was one of the artists featured in the documentary series Hiraya. His goal in life is not only to spread awareness of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and justice but to empower action toward change. Michael Wing has been a strong advocate for people with disabilities and those with mental illness for many years. One thing that he noticed in media is that people with disabilities and those with mental illness are generally left out of the conversation. Michael wants to change that. Born with the rare genetic disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka ‘brittle bone disease’), and a wheelchair user since the age of six, Athena grew up navigating an ill-fitting narrative about being disabled in our society. On one end of the spectrum is the highly medicalized representation of the disabled body that typically focuses on pain, deformity and lack of function. Frida Kahlo’s surrealist self-portraits depicting the painful and distorting aspects of her body and her disability are an example of how this interpretation of disability has shown up in the world of art. On the other end of the spectrum is the objectification of people with disabilities as “super crips” that are held up as inspirational for simply living with their disability. Aleem Jaffer is a public speaker and model with Kello Inclusive, and one of the stars of the new docu-series PUSH on CBC and CBC Gem. Career wise, Aleem is a Job Developer where he helps people with barriers to find meaningful employment and earned a Bachelor of Management in Human Resources and Labour Relations from the University of Lethbridge - graduating with Distinction and a Business Administration Finance Diploma from NAIT. Michelle Bissell came onto the Board of Directors of the Voice of Albertans with Disabilities in October 2014 and now is the Education Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Certificate in Career Development from Concordia University Collage of Alberta. She participates with an occupational therapy class at the University of Alberta, as Student Educator.
