Tim Estes on leadership, founder's values and building an AI company to embed these values

1/31/2023
My distinguished guest today is Tim Estes. I had very good reasons to invite him on the show. Tim envisioned a new way computers could learn to understand language. He is a leading influencer, advocate and public speaker on the use of technology and analytics to achieve social good in financial services, government, healthcare and academia. He also cares intensely about protecting digital privacy, something I am equally interested in. To summarize, Tim is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he studied philosophy of language and mathematics. In 2000, he co-founded Digital Reasoning Systems. He became the company’s chairman and CEO. 21 years later, Tim departed Digital Reasoning Systems having sold the company. Josh Nonet-Black on programming without sight

12/20/2022
My distinguished guest today is Josh Nonet-Black graduated in the UK in 2020 with a degree in astrophysics and then joined Deloitte’s data science and AI team in the Risk Analytics function. Josh is not the usual senior guest you are used to meet on my podcast, who can share their decades of wisdom. I, however, invited Josh to teach us wisdom that not so many of us have: he has been blind since birth. And this hasn't stopped him reading astrophysics, skiing, or building machine learning models. I invited him to talk about his process of programming without sight and to unpack why sight limitation becomes an opportunity to understand the world beyond its three dimensional boundaries. Being blind empowers Josh with abstract thinking and, I would add, with the ability to solve problems in a different and better way. I believe that the value he adds to his teams is second to none.
