The fall of one of the world’s most powerful newspapers

2/5/2026
Yesterday, the Washington Post announced it would cut a third of its workforce in one of the most significant restructures in the newspaper's nearly 150 year history. The cuts eliminate entire departments, including sports and books coverage, and drastically reduce international reporting. Today, we're unpacking what happened, why one of America's most storied newspapers is in this position, and what it means for journalism. The state banning 'good character' references in its courts

Can erotica fix Australia’s reading slump?

2/1/2026
Over the past decade Aussie reading rates have been in decline, with more and more young people saying that they don’t read for pleasure - ever. That is until very recently, with a booming interest in novels about sex and love showing signs that the tide may just be turning. In today’s deep dive, we're speaking to Anna Burkly from Australia Reads to help us unpack what’s really going on — why romance novels are capturing hearts, inspiring new readers, and creating a lifeline for a generation struggling to pick up a book. What we know about the WA bomb scare

1/29/2026
On Monday, a man threw a bomb into a crowd at an Invasion Day Rally in Perth, Western Australia. Police said the bomb, which failed to detonate, was designed to “explode on impact”. One of the rally organisers, Fabian Yarran, called it a “hate crime against First Nations people and protesters” and said it must be “fully investigated as an act of terrorism”. Police, however, have not labelled it as terrorism. They’ve said they’re treating it as a “potential” terror act. We’ll explain what you need to know about what happened, and the fallout that has ensued, in today’s podcast. 13YARN: 13 92 76 Hosts: Billi FitzSimons and Zara Seidler Producer: Rosa Bowden Want to support The Daily Aus?
