The Columbine High School Massacre of April 20, 1999 is an incident which ushered in a horrible new normal of school shootings. But it wasn’t the first, and from the beginning the case has been clouded with myths, mistruths and outright lies. Today we seek to uncover the facts about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who they were, what they hoped to accomplish, and how two gifted students and computer nerds became cold-blooded killers. Hans Schmidt was many things, a Catholic priest, a mystic and scholar, a forger and counterfeiter, a necrophiliac and sexual deviant, a convicted murderer and suspected serial killer. He was also the only priest in history to be executed in the United States, having been electrocuted in Sing Sing prison on February 18, 1916. On Holy Saturday, April 5, 1980, Catholic nun Sister Margaret Ann Pahl was murdered in a chapel in Toledo, Ohio in a ritualistic manner many thought was a human sacrifice to the devil. There was only one suspect, a moody and brooding priest named Father Gerald Robinson; but, in what many considered an elaborate conspiracy involving police, bishops, prosecutors and church officials, no charges were ever filed and the case went unsolved. 17-year-old Tyler Hadley desperately wanted to throw a party in his parents’ house, so on Saturday, July 16, 2011, he ate three hits of ecstasy and bludgeoned his mom and dad to death with the claw end of a 22-inch framing hammer, then posted on Facebook he was having a party. “Eddie” Heriberto Seda was a serial killer with an uncanny resemblance to Eddie Munster, who was obsessed with sorcery, necromancy, astronomy, magic and spells, and who envisioned himself as a continuation of the infamous Zodiac Killer who’d terrorized San Francisco twenty years earlier. Like the original Zodiac Killer, Eddie wrote bizarre letters to the press and police, plunging New York into a state of panic and fear, becoming known as the New York Zodiac. Long before high school English teacher Susan Reinert was found dead, naked and beaten in the hatchback of her Plymouth Horizon, it was obvious that the staff of Upper Merion High were out of control and engaged in debauchery of all sorts. The principal, Dr Jay C. Smith, whom staff and students alike referred to as the Prince of Darkness, had a penchant for bestiality, robbery and drug dealing. The chair of the English Department, Bill Bradfield, a self-professed poet obsessed with fascist writer Ezra Pound, was known to be carrying on wild affairs with students and staff alike. In the end five people would end up murdered or missing, including two children, in a bizarre case that’s come to be known as the Main Line Murders.
