After years on trial and then in prison (specifically on death row for Damien), for the murders of three 8 year old boys, Jason, Jessie, and Damien had not given up. Not only were they still working to be free and clear their own names, but they were actively involved in trying to solve the case. After their arrests, Damien, Jason, and Jessie were prepared for trial. The county bought them suits, so they wouldn’t have to undergo trial in their prison jumpsuits. Damien and Jason would be tried together, but first Jessie would be tried on his own. Much like their questioning during the investigation, the trial would focus heavily on the idea that the three teens killed Stevie, Mike, and Chris as a part of a Satanic ritual. Early on in the case, the West Memphis police had narrowed down their persons of interest, and abandoned any other options. In a small town like West Memphis, Arkansas (with a population of about 27,000 next to its neighboring city of Memphis, at 620,000), everybody seemed to know everybody. On May 5th, 1993 at around 7:00 PM, John Mark Byers made a call to the West Memphis, Arkansas police to report his adoptive son, Christopher Byers, missing and let them know that his two best friends, Stevie Branch and Michael Moore, were with him. Stevie’s step-father, Terry Hobbs, had been calling for the boys to come home for about 30 minutes at that point, and no one had been able to find them. They were last seen by their neighbors riding bikes and playing together, heading toward a drainage canal called Robin Hood Hills. On November 16th, 1957, Plainfield, Wisconsin’s Deputy Sheriff Frank Worden entered his family’s hardware store at 5:00 pm, expecting to see his mother, but instead he found an empty store. The cash register was open and the floor was covered in blood. He reached out to his fellow investigators to let them know of his mother’s disappearance, and he let them know that he had an idea of who might have her. He had found a sales slip on the counter for antifreeze, written to Ed Gein. Gein had been coming around to the store a lot recently, and the Worden family was already becoming weary of him. With the receipt as evidence, Gein was arrested at a nearby grocery store, and the Waushara County Sheriff’s Department made their way to the Gein farm to look for Bernice Worden. Terrence Shamel Woods Jr. was born on October 24, 1991 into a very close-knit family. For as long as his father could remember, Terrence Jr. wanted to be a film producer. He graduated from the University of Maryland and then went to London to receive a double master’s degree, and he remained there for the next 5 years. In October of 2018, Terrence got a job as a production assistant at a film shoot in Idaho. He told his father, Terrence Sr., that they had finished their work on October 5th, and by October 6th, the family had gotten a call they never expected. In June of 2002, in West Columbia, South Carolina, 15-year-old Kara Robinson was out in the front yard of her best friend’s house, helping to water some plants and shrubs, when a strange man, about 30 years old, clean-cut and white, approached her. She had actually noticed his car leaving the neighborhood before because it was a car she liked, so she thought it was odd when it pulled back into the neighborhood and into her friend’s driveway. He began by asking if her parents were home and if he could sell them some magazines. She told him that this was actually not her house, and he asked if her friends’ parents were home. When she said they weren’t, he handed her the magazines with his left hand and put a small pistol to her neck with his right hand and demanded she come with him. He told her if she screamed, he would shoot her, and he forced her into his Pontiac TransAm. The Coronado police were called out to the same home twice in one week. First, when a little boy fell over the stair railing and was taken to the hospital. Then, less than two full days later, a woman was found hanging from her balcony - nude, bound, and gagged - and was pronounced dead at the scene. On February 25th, 1980, in Blountstown, Florida, 2-year-old Cassidy Marie Johnson was taken to the hospital, accompanied by her parents. She had been brought in because her babysitter, Christine, had told them that Cassidy had suddenly passed out and fallen out of her crib, hitting her head. Christine explained that when she realized Cassidy didn’t seem to be breathing, and didn’t seem to have a pulse, she tried to revive her herself, but was unable to, so she called the Sheriff's Department. An ambulance came to transport her to the hospital in Tallahassee. On June 3rd, 2011, 20 year old Indiana University student, Lauren Spierer, disappeared after a night out with friends. Camera footage followed her route until 2:51am where it showed her exiting an alley. The story is that witnesses saw her alive until 4:30am, when Lauren started walking home alone with no shoes, phone, purse, or keys - so intoxicated that she could barely walk. But she never made it home. Today, 13 years later, Lauren has still never been found and her case remains unsolved.
