Many of yesterdays bands have changed their sound, but yet many more have not changed their sound. Bands like A7X, Slipknot, Metallica, etc continue to produce music that established their fan base. True fans love them no matter what. Yet P!ATD, Paramore, FOB have changed their sounds to accommodate other demographics that weren't originally into their style of music.
