Japan Blues // 05 Feb 2026
2/4/2026
Invitation Records, another major label subsidiary with little or no known history, falling between the genre stools just the way we like, in Japan Blues’ air-conditioned bunker. With scattershot styles taking in disco, soul, funk, rock, jazz and experimental tweaks. A division of JVC Victor - BMG Sony in today’s money - Victor in Japan had the copyright for HMV’s Nipper logo - the classic opera enthusiast terrier, listening attentively to a cylinder recording. They were aligned with RCA in the west, all very complicated - much simpler now the world is run by a couple of corporations, no? Starting in 1977, it barely registered the advent of punk, though there were new wave stylings here and there, notably classic techno-pop outfit Plastics. From esoteric Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s psychedelic cult journeying to ex members of the Sadistic Mika Band, jazz singer Yasuko Agawa, to the abstract dub J-pop clash from one-off Chris. A cordial Invitation awaits.

Express Records- Tucked away in a dusty drawer of music history, forgotten in the corporate crush of mergers and dissolutions, lies Express Records. One of the growing Japanese EMI stable of labels from the late 1960s. There seems little written about it anywhere, and yet it launched the careers of many significant artists who still make their presence felt today, among them Maki Asawaka, The Jacks, Kimiko Kasai and Lily. With a consistently unrevealing branding, the label kept its logo constant through its 40 years and maintained a broad sweep of styles. Pioneering guitar acts, alongside a steady production line of soul and jazz singers, backed by slick bands, with the occasional avant-garde production tweak. Japan's trains are always reliable, sleek, and there's always something curious on the food trolley - now boarding: Express Records.

An’archives In The UK - Selections from the An'archives archive
A firm favourite, ever since a strange parcel of promo CDs arrived in the basement of Honest Jons all those years ago - in a previous life, the formative days of Japan Blues. Hailing from France, and now a sturdy limb of mythical label PSF’s family tree. With Japanese underground and avant-garde artists a speciality, the label’s releases are an unpredictable and engaging collection, skilfully avoiding being pigeonholed and all the better for it. Alongside studio recordings are timeless one-off gigs from the vibrant Japanese small venue scene, some no larger than a living room, something almost unheard of here in the UK. The house rules ensure all releases are presented in lavish, hand assembled screen-printed sleeves, with various inserts including sleeve-notes, artwork, postcards and photos, printed on lush paper or card and wrapped with a sacred obi - also screen-printed. Anyone see the wooden slip case set? Screen-printed? Natch. Sounds cover anything from noise, improv., underground rock, free jazz, guitar pop, psychedelia, hybrid enka, folk-rock, and gaps that will no doubt be filled at some point, as the selections keep shifting. Don’t expect techno or music by numbers anytime soon, but then... The label has a sparse presence in the digital realm, no “curated” cat or bragging videos to engage algorithmically punch-drunk audiences. Just the music, the art, and the love - no apologies. The triangle is complete: France, Japan, and An’archives In The UK.
