These utes are too bloody BIG! Ep 247

9/15/2022
The RAM 1500 has been a big sales success in Australia, as has the Chevy Silverado, with the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra to join them soon. But are these US super-utes just too big to operate safely here? Try parking one at Woolies! The already substantial HiLux is just under 5.3m long, a bit over 1.8m wide, and around 1.8m tall. But the Tundra crushes it at 5.9m long, 2.0m wide, and 2.0m tall. How big's your garage? Will it even fit comfortably on a typical Aussie road, or be able to turn on tighter suburban streets? Or are these monster trucks better as narrowly-focused, specialised vehicles, suited to heavy-duty highway towing, or off-road work? Join the discussion! We'll also cover 'This Week in News' - the breaking stories you need to know about (HiLux Rogue, Y62 Patrol, electric Triton), and we give you a rundown on the fresh metal we've been driving this week, in 'Cars in the Garage'. EVs be damned! Ep 246

9/2/2022
We're currently swamped with so much electric car news, but in the next 12 months these old school, front-engine, rear-drive, manual-available, combustion engine cars will be fighting for best-selling sports model in the Aussie market. In this episode, the podcast panel looks at the impact of the new Nissan Z, next-gen Ford Mustang, still fresh Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR 86 twins, and others. Could this be your last chance to buy an affordable, traditional, fun-to-drive performance coupe that follows the pure, suck-squeeze-bang-blow principle? Join the investigation! We’ll also cover ‘This Week in News’ - the breaking stories you need to know about (Toyota from boring to bonkers, Wey Yuan Meng madness, and Walkinshaw world domination), plus we give you a rundown on the fresh metal we’ve been driving this week, in ‘Cars in the Garage’. PHEVs are not THE answer! Ep 245

8/25/2022
New hybrid and 100 per cent EV models are arriving in the Aussie market by the bucket load. Great for city-dwellers, but if you're a rural driver you might be feeling as if this brave new world is passing you by. Could the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle offer the best of both worlds, with enough battery power to allow meaningful zero-emissions driving around town, as well as extended road-trip range, with easy, rapid refuelling and a combustion engine? Or is it an EV dead-end that looks good in theory but is a waste of time in reality? Join the debate! We'll also cover 'This Week in News' - the breaking stories you need to know about (Toyota Tundra for Oz, Audi ute, BYD under fire), and we give you a rundown on the fresh metal we've been driving this week, in 'Cars in the Garage'. 8/12/2022

Ford’s Ranger and Everest sales problem! #242

8/5/2022
Is Ford failing in Australia? The brand easily and successfully sells the Ranger pickup and Everest 4x4 SUV, but its other models are being overlooked. The Ranger ute is by far Ford’s top-selling model and it is Australia’s second favourite model behind HiLux, for sales. The Everest SUV is also a sales winner. So why can’t Ford seem to sell any other models, and what is the company doing about it? In this episode of the CarsGuide podcast, Tim Nicholson, Byron Mathioudakis and Stephen Ottley investigate whether Ford can broaden its appeal beyond its two hero cars.
