GETTIN' SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST Ep. 199 | TRIBUTE TO CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT PETER GANCI

4/25/2024
Our special guests will be 43 year FDNY veteran Deputy Chief Jay Jonas and Chief of Dept Ganci's son, FDNY Battalion Chief Chris Ganci. We will be paying Tribute to FDNY Chief of Dept, Peter Ganci Jr. who died on 9-11-01. Chief Ganci was 18 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was 1965 and the Vietnam War was raging. He volunteered for “Airborne” and was later assigned to the famous 82nd Airborne unit. He would spend two years in the Army and attain the rank of Sargent. However, he was never deployed to Vietnam. He was appointed to the FDNY on September 14‚ 1968 and assigned as a firefighter to Engine 92 in the Bronx and then to 111 truck in Brooklyn. His climb to the top began as Lieutenant‚ Ladder 124‚ August 1977. While at Ladder 124‚ serving as a lieutenant‚ He was awarded the B.C. Frank Tuttlemondo medal in 1982 for performing an act of bravery and courage when he rescued a child from a burning apartment that was heavily engulfed in smoke‚ heat and fire. B.C. Robert Scalone of the 28th Battalion‚ after investigating this incident wrote‚ ‘without regard for his own safety‚ Ganci‚ with unerring skill and accuracy‚ moved into an atmosphere heavily charged with heat and smoke. If it were not for his quick‚ skillful actions‚ the rescued child would certainly have perished.’ When the incident was discussed with then Lt. Pete Ganci‚ he summed it all up very succinctly by saying‚ "When a firefighter realizes that someone is being robbed of life by fire‚ adrenalin and determination replace any thoughts of personal safety". It was this same determination that Chief Ganci‚ on September 11th as the Chief of Department‚ led and directed the most successful rescue operation of the modern era. Over 30‚000 people were saved because of Chief Ganci and his fellow firefighters. His career achievements included Captain‚ 1983; Battalion Chief‚ 1987; Deputy Chief 1993; Deputy Assistant Chief in charge of Bureau of Fire Investigation‚ 1994; Assistant Chief of Operations‚ 1996; Chief of operations 1997-99; Acting Chief of Department‚ 1998-99; and Chief of Department‚ October 1999 to September 11‚ 2001. Although Chief Pete will always be recognized for his distinguished accomplishments in the FDNY‚ his greatest legacy will live on through his Family. Pete Ganci‚ a loving husband to his wife Kathy‚ a devoted father to his children‚ Peter‚ Chris‚ and Danielle‚ will be remembered for his quick wit‚ his zest for life and his unforgettable smile. Remember WE HONOR the BRAVE men and women like Chief Ganci, who refused to quit; refused to retreat; and fought until the very end! / gettinsaltyexperience Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gettin-salty-experience-firefighter-podcast--4218265/support.

THE INVENTOR'S CORNER Ep. 11 | FIRE WIPES

4/8/2024
In our Newest Segment, "The Inventor's Corner" we will have on Creston Ludlow from Fire Wipes. The materials that burn in today’s fires contain a more complex mixture of textiles and composites, which creates a much more hazardous environment than ever before. Pressed woods, plastics, synthetic materials and laminates in today’s homes, businesses and industrial settings present a large amount of harmful chemicals that can all be linked to all types of cancers. -It all started when Creston, a career firefighter, was leaving the scene of a structure fire that he and his crew had been at for a few hours. They were headed back to the station to clean up and get the rig back into service, when they were dispatched to back-to-back medical calls that kept them out for several hours. During this time between medical calls while in transit, Creston and his crew were discussing the lack of availability to perform any kind of gross decon for themselves until they were able to return to the station. This is when he realized that there was a need for a disposable, on-scene cleansing product to help remove soot and other harmful contaminants from the skin. -A few weeks later while on a long road trip, a conversation about the same issue came up between Creston and Ken, who are longtime friends. They agreed that this was a serious issue facing firefighters everywhere and decided to do something about it. -The idea for Firewipes® was born and Creston and Ken began their mission that day. The Firewipe is an 8″x12″ biodegradable industrial strength disposable wipe infused with cleansing compounds for use on all external dermal areas. -We will check it out and give you the straight skinny. 😎 Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gettin-salty-experience-firefighter-podcast--4218265/support.

GETTIN' SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST Ep. 187 | TRIBUTE TO FDNY CAPTAIN WILLIAM BURKE JR.

2/19/2024
Getting’ Salty Experience Podcast Ep.187 TRIBUTE TO FDNY CAPTAIN WILLIAM BURKE JR. Be sure to tune into our next segment of "NEVER FORGET” with special guests, 43 year FDNY veteran Deputy Chief Jay Jonas and Capt. Burke's brother Mike Burke. We will be paying Tribute to FDNY Captain William "Billy" Burke Jr. who died on 9-11-01. William “Billy” Burke Jr. grew up on Plainview, Long Island. His father was William F. Burke Sr and a Deputy Chief assigned to the 6th Division in the Bronx. During his tenure as a Deputy Chief in the 6th Division, the Bronx experienced unprecedented levels of fire duty. Throughout his career, many Bronx Firefighters would approach Billy Burke Jr. to tell him how much they admired and respected his Dad. They told him that his Dad always took care of his men. This is a lesson that Billy Burke Jr. would learn and practice. Capt. Burke was appointed to the FDNY on January 9, 1982 and was assigned to Engine 24. In September 1986, he transferred to Ladder 11 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He was promoted to LT in 1991 and assigned to 34 Engine. He was promoted to Captain in 1997 and assigned to Engine 21 in June of 2001. Captain William F. Burke Jr. was beloved wherever he worked. He was a positive force in affecting the demeanor of those around him. On September 11th, he led his Firefighters into the North Tower, and he told them to evacuate when he realized that the situation in the North Tower was untenable. Yet, Capt. Burke stayed behind and helped those that couldn’t help themselves. A lesson he may have learned from his Dad, take care of your men. WE HONOR the BRAVE men and women like Captain Burke, who refused to quit; refused to retreat; and fought until the very end!!Join us at the kitchen table on the BEST FIREFIGHTER PODCAST ON THE INTERNET.
