Talking Toddlers

Family

As a new mom, don’t you wish you had someone whispering in your ear with practical and trustworthy guidance? Finding clarity can be challenging these days, and the uncertainty seems almost deafening. Talking Toddlers breaks down how our children grow, learn & develop - by building relationships, human connections, and learning through language. I’m Erin Hyer, a licensed speech-language pathologist - and for nearly 35 years I’ve played with kids on the floor, inspired parents to use everyday routines for learning, consulted with early educators, and trained graduate students to move beyond the classroom and “think outside the box.” My purpose is clear - understand how the brain learns to learn, bridge any gaps before they turn into life-long challenges, and keep kids moving forward. I don’t believe in “taking anything for granted” or “leaving it to chance.” Nor do I subscribe to accepting the increasing “new normal.” Parents are in a very special position to create a language-rich home environment & truly guide kids to thrive, to learn through everyday activities, while building confidence, flexibility and a true curiosity for learning. Episodes will bring practical ideas, as well as, some deep dives to help you understand why there are roadblocks? I believe we are more likely to implement strategies and activities or make changes if we know the reasoning behind them. My goal - to help moms feel empowered and toddlers happier. Please join me every Tuesday, Talking Toddlers where moms come for clarity, connection and courage. Stay tuned for amazing interviews, discussions & practical guidance on how Talking Toddlers learn to thrive - at home - with their moms!

Building Independence: Why is Boredom Your Toddler’s Best Friend?

3/12/2024
You don't need to interact with and entertain your baby during every waking moment. Babies need time on their own, too, so they can gradually start to understand that they're independent from you. Slowing life down a bit and letting your child be bored can have lots of benefits. One of the first things you may notice - even in very young babies - is that it allows them to explore on their own. They seek out what interests them instead of relying on us to provide them with something to be interested in. Your little one deserves the best, and it starts with embracing the beauty of boredom. That’s where boredom gives children an inner quiet that helps with imagination and self-awareness. ===================== In this episode, we'll uncover 10 essential strategies that every new mom can use to harness the power of natural boredom. Let's break the myth that constant entertainment is the answer and explore how giving your child the space to BE BORED can actually lead to more fulfilling, imaginative play. If you're ready to unlock the magic of building independent play and nurturing your child's healthy development, join me on this insightful journey. 2/27/2024
Pretend play is the ultimate brain builder. It's the magic potion that sparks language, supercharges social skills, and boosts emotional intelligence. The 3 top benefits of pretend play. Language Leaps: Pretend play acts as a secret language workshop for your little one. As they engage in imaginative scenarios, they're not just playing – they're experimenting with words, tones, and expressions. This playful chatter is a significant building block for their language development, turning every tea party and superhero adventure into a language-rich classroom. Social Skills Supercharge: Picture this – your toddler hosting a teddy bear picnic or sharing toys with imaginary friends. These make-believe interactions aren't just adorable; they're social training grounds. Pretend play helps toddlers grasp the nuances of sharing, taking turns, and understanding others' perspectives. It's a social skills boot camp that happens organically through play. Emotional Intelligence Boost: Behind those superhero capes and tea party tiaras lies a world of emotions waiting to be explored. Pretend play allows toddlers to express, understand, and navigate a range of feelings in a safe, imaginative space. It's like a mini therapy session, helping them build emotional resilience and empathy – crucial tools for a lifetime of healthy relationships. Remember mom, you're not just facilitating play; you're laying the groundwork for a confident, communicative, and emotionally intelligent little human. How Toddlers Learn To Talk: Stages You Need For Success

1/30/2024
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the fascinating world into the crucial stages of babbling with your baby. To ensure a thorough understanding of the subtle distinctions between each stage and how best to gauge your baby’s or toddler’s growth, I've split this remarkable exploration into two episodes. CLICK HERE TO GRAB ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST We explore the significance of both cooing and babbling as precursors to language development, serving as windows into your child’s cognitive and communicative abilities. For those with older toddlers, these insights will help determine if they're slow talkers, plateaued, or right on track. Drawing from over three decades of clinical practice and real-life experience, I guide you on why being intentional during these moments is paramount. Unfortunately, not many professionals discuss the significance of babbling, perhaps because they don’t fully understand it themselves. More importantly, the common advice to "just wait, he’ll find his way" is, in my opinion, evasive. I share insights from the rich history of research on early child development, emphasizing the importance of actively engaging with your baby during these formative stages. Understanding these early cues can empower you to foster optimal linguistic growth right from the start. Practical strategies and everyday activities to enhance both cooing and babbling skills are discussed, promoting a strong foundation for future language acquisition. As always, the tone of the podcast is a blend of loving encouragement and firm guidance, mirroring the nuanced approach of parenting itself. Remember, you've got this—now, step up!
