Deadpool Reshoots? Peacemaker's DCU Canon Status - Multiverse News 3.13.24

3/13/2024
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your one-stop-shop for Info about all your favorite fandoms. Vetted scooper with an accuracy rating of nearly 80%, DanielRPK has supplied us with another MCU rumor this week, claiming that Deadpool & Wolverine will undergo reshoots in May ahead of its July release. Reshoots are a normal part of any production, but with Deadpool being Marvel Studios’ sole feature film of 2024 and these taking place so close to the film’s release, do they give us cause for concern, or excitement? James Gunn’s recent social media comments attempting to clarify Peacemaker’s status in the DCU canon, may have had the opposite effect. While addressing fan questions on Threads, the filmmaker stated that the first season of the John Cena led Max series is not canon and that the second season would take place after the events of Superman, going as far to confirm that movie’s events would have an impact on the show. Are we able to make peace with these somewhat contradictory revelations? Netflix has renewed the live action adaptation series of Avatar: The Last Airbender for two more seasons, with the series set to end at the conclusion of season 3. While we have 2 Avatar aficionados on the panel, we’d figured we’d open up the floor to discuss the series, its source material and future. Who’s saying, ‘yip, yip!’, ? Another Hollywood strike may be just around the corner, as the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and major Hollywood studios have begun negotiations for a new contract. Similar to last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the primary focuses include wage increases, contract enforcement, "quality of life" aspects, and protections against emerging technologies, including AI. The current contract expires on July 31, potentially leading to a strike if an agreement is not reached in the coming months. Are we clutching our pearls yet?

Dune Part 2 held its world premiere in London last week, bringing several valuable nuggets of information to the surface in addition to showcasing some truly out-of-this-world fashion. Most surprisingly, Anya Taylor-Joy was in attendance, confirming her unknown participation in the sequel, while she disclosed her character to those in attendance, it has not yet been officially announced. Following the premiere, first reactions to the film hit the internet, with overwhelming positivity and praise, citing it as superior to the first installment and lauding it as a sci-fi masterpiece. Star Wars seems all in on video game expansion of the saga’s lore this week, with developer of Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor, Respawn Entertainment, reported to be in the early stages of creating a first-person Mandalorian bounty hunter video game. This news was coupled with comments from Cameron Monaghan, the actor who provides the likeness, voice and motion capture for Cal Kestis, the protagonist of Respawn’s Star Wars games, who said he’d be open to portraying the character in live action under the right circumstances. Madame Web released in theaters last week and with a $26.2 million six-day haul, C+ CinemaScore, and a 13 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the reception across the board is downright pitiful. The performance is not entirely unexpected, as the film has been saddled with a laughable marketing campaign and disparaging comments from Madame Web herself, Dakota Johnson. This seems to mark a new low for high profile comic book adaptations. Oppenheimer dominated the 2024 BAFTAS Sunday evening, winning seven awards. Fans of the recent Percy Jackson and the Olympians series officially received the news that season two has been greenlit. Disney is investing $1.5 billion Epic Games - known best for Fortnite. CEO Bob Iger explained that the goal is to create a gaming universe that features beloved characters from Disney’s hottest franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and more. And last - but never least - it was announced that Taylor Swift’s concert film The Eras Tour will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning March 15.Last week we discussed the seemingly-rushed new Jurassic World movie, which had announced that its director would be David Leitch. But talks between Universal and Leith fell through and the director is no longer attached to the project. In a surprising move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences governing board announced a new category that will first be given away in 2026 - Best Achievement in Casting. It’s been nearly 25 years since a new category was announced - the last one being Best Animated Feature Film in 2001. A joint statement from the Academy Casting Director Branch governors expressed appreciation for the acknowledgment and recognition for casting directors. Official rules will be announced in April 2025 and films of that year will be the first ones considered for the award. Paramount released the first trailer for its limited series and Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off, Knuckles, starring Idris Elba in the lead voice acting role. The six episode show will debut on Paramount+ on April 26. This March, Marvel Comics will release a prelude comic for the X-Men ‘97 animated show. After being saved from a tax break death at Warner Bros., the John Cena and Lana Condor movie, Coyote Vs Acme is officially being shelved forever. Although Warner Brothers did attempt to shop the film to other studios including Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount, their asking price of between $75 and $80 million for the film was too high to attract a buyer. Wicked author Gregory Maguire will release a new prequel titled Elphie: A Wicked Childhood on October 1. Maguire has written eight Oz-inspired books.

What Trailers Will the Super Bowl Bring, Marvel's Wonder Man Series Resumes Filming, Argylle Disappoints

2/7/2024
Whatever our reasons for tuning in or out this Super Bowl Sunday, as movie fans, there’s no denying the impact the event has in terms of trailers and TV spots, with Paramount, Universal, and Disney all investing a record $7 million per 30-second Super Bowl spot. Paramount has three spots booked, featuring "Bob Marley: One Love," John Krasinski's "IF," and "A Quiet Place: Day One." Disney is expected to promote its Father's Day release "Inside Out 2" and the trailer for Marvel Studios' sole 2024 release "Deadpool 3,". Universal may feature spots for various films, including "Twisters," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "Monkeyman," and "The Fall Guy." Sony and Warner Bros are notably absent from Super Bowl spots this year, and there's no confirmation from Apple or Netflix about promoting their major projects during the event either. Despite rumors of its cancellation, Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is apparently back on track and actively in production according to leaked set photos and footage circulating the web. Production of the series, led by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and producer Andrew Guest, began in April but was paused due to last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The images in question tease an in-universe film franchise depicting a marquee with the Wonder Man title card along with the character's logo and emblem. While we are lacking on official details, including a release date, the latest we’ve heard is that the series will fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and Sir Ben Kingsley is expected to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. Unfortunately we learned today that a crew member who was a rigger has sadly died on set after falling from the rafters. The on-set accident did not occur during filming and we certainly share the condolences of the cast and crew. Although it debuted at the top of the box office, Matthew Vaughn's $200 million would be February blockbuster, Argylle, has not performed well, with an $18 million domestic and $35 million global start, coupled with a C+ CinemaScore. The star-studded ensemble cast failed to attract audiences as predicted by tracking. Despite Apple's substantial financial prowess, these big-budget films, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, are not proving profitable when considering the overall motion picture profit and loss sheet, lacking ancillaries like foreign TV, theme park tie-ins, or cruise ship exploitation, prompting questions about the streamers long-term viability. During the documentary "Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2," creative director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3, revealing that he has a conceptual idea for another chapter in the story. Druckmann emphasized that while the first two games had clear concepts of parental love and the pursuit of justice, the potential third installment would be its own unique narrative. He clarified that a previously mentioned story about Joel's brother, Tommy, was not outlined for The Last of Us Part 3, but rather a separate project that was shelved temporarily due to other priorities at Naughty Dog. Elsewhere in the Last of Us franchise, Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara has been cast in an undisclosed role for the HBO show’s second season. 2024 Grammy Winners: o Best pop solo performance: Miley Cyrus, "Flowers" o Best música urbana album: Karol G, "Mañana Será Bonito" o Best country album: Lainey Wilson, "Bell Bottom Country" o Best R&B song: SZA, "Snooze" o Best pop vocal album: Taylor Swift, "Midnights" o Song of the year: "What Was I Made For?" Billie Eilish & Finneas o Best new artist: Victoria Monét o Record of the year: "Flowers" – Miley Cyrus

Thunderbolts Cast Gets Bigger, DC Has Their Supergirl, The Last of Us Has a Strong Direction, Marvel and Sony Fight Over Spider-Man

1/31/2024
There’s been a flurry of casting news surrounding Marvel Studios movie Thunderbolts this week. Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry star Lewis Pullman has an offer to replace Steven Yuen as Sentry after Yuen exited the project due to scheduling issues. Additionally, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join the film replacing Ayo Edebiri, who is also departing the project due to her schedule. It is also said that audiences can expect to see Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishbourne in the project portraying their respective MCU characters Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. Our pal James Gunn didn’t leave us hanging this week with his announcement that Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl. Alcock is best known for playing young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO’s House of the Dragon, part of the Game of Thrones universe. The Last of Us has secured their directing talent for season two and it’s chock-full of award winners. Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for his work on the final season of HBO’s Succession; Kate Herron, who directed the first season of the Marvel Studios series Loki; Stephen Williams, nominated for an Emmy for directing on HBO’s Watchmen; and Nina Lopez-Corrado, nominated for an Imagen award for directing on season two of HBO’s Perry Mason. Will Mom and Dad ever stop fighting? And by Mom and Dad of course we mean…Marvel and Sony. The studio giants are reportedly unable to see eye-to-eye about the direction Tom Holland’s Spider-Man should go in a fourth Spider-man film. Sony is understandably trying to boost their Sonyverse with a crossover event that would include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, but Marvel sees things differently. Marvel desires that Holland’s Spider-Man continues with a more grounded approach that is intuitive to the character. Multiple Spider-Man appearances were scrapped from the upcoming Madame Web movie that Sony is putting out. Christopher Nolan's film Tenet will be rereleased in IMAX theaters from February 23 to March 1. The first trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been released. The film will debut on March 21. Tom Hollander, a British actor known for performances in Pride & Prejudice, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The White Lotus, and The Night Manager, spoke on a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers about a time he was mistakenly sent a box office bonus check meant for Tom Holland for his appearance in Avengers films. Hollander said "“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box-office bonus. Not the whole box-office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I’d ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.” A four-issue limited comic series called Darth Vader - Black White & Red will be on sale starting April 25. Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. After a year-long search for Trevor Noah's replacement on The Daily Show, former longtime host Jon Stewart has agreed to return to host the program. Stewart will appear weekly throughout the 2024 US Presidential election. While speaking to ComicBook.com about her Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness, Zoe Saldana said she would be willing to play more superhero roles as long as they didn't require the extensive makeup process used to create her MCU character of Gamora. "If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful." Later this year, Marvel Comics will apply their What If...? concept to the Alien franchise. A five-issue run will be released, following the character Carter Burke and what happened after.

Yeun Exits Thunderbolts, 2024 Golden Globes Talk, Star Wars Returns to the Big Screen

1/10/2024
Blunderbolts? Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has suffered another setback as Variety is reporting that Steven Yeun has exited the project. While The Walking Dead and Invincible star was never officially confirmed to be in the film by Marvel, he was heavily rumored to be playing the role of The Sentry. Said rumors culminated recently when Yeun’s frequent collaborator Robert Kirkman seemingly ousted the casting news during a YouTube live stream. Additionally, Yeun himself commented on his departure, citing scheduling conflicts and a desire to reteam with Marvel on a future project. Joke’s On You, Jo Koy Sunday night’s 2024 Golden Globes ceremony marked a memorable occasion for the awards organization. Despite host Jo Koy’s distractingly questionable antics, the first awards ceremony independent of the Hollywood Foreign Press managed to get a lot right, subjectively, in terms of the winners. Barbie saw the most nominations of any film and managed to secure two Golden Globes, while Oppenheimer garnered both the best motion picture in the drama category and directing awards for Nolan. In television, Succession and The Bear were named as the best drama and comedy series, respectively. Winners in the acting category include Lily Gladstone, Paul Giamatti, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Allen White, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ayo Edebiri, Kieran Culkin, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and Matthew Macfadyen. MCU’s Street-Level Legacy The latest trailer for Marvel Studios’ Echo Disney Plus series has set the internet fandom ablaze as it seemingly officially canonized Netflix’s Daredevil within the MCU. The trailer serves to emphasize the return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk to his rightful place as the criminal underworld’s Kingpin and features black and white archival footage of the character from the Netflix’s series’ first season.
