37. Pumping Duration

3/14/2024
Being a mom is a lot of work, and when we add pumping on top of that it can feel overwhelming. I often find myself asking: how do I prioritize it all and make time? Over the last several years, I have had many people reach out to ask the age-old question: is it better to have 8 shorter pumping sessions or 4 longer ones? In order to find the answer, we need to delve into the science behind lactation and hormone stimulation. When we do this, it provides valuable insight into the best pumping practices for maintaining milk supply and efficiency. Over the course of the episode, I dismiss the myth that longer pumping sessions equals more milk. Pumping for extended periods might seem like a great idea, but it could actually hinder your milk production. I provide valuable insights and advice backed by scientific explanation, addressing common misconceptions and the potential pitfalls of certain pumping strategies Through practical advice and encouragement, I aim to support tired moms navigating the demanding world of exclusive pumping. So sit back, grab your pump, and get ready for some lactation education. 35. Level 2 Ultrasound with a Flashback

2/29/2024
Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions. Six years ago, I faced a heartbreaking chapter in my pregnancy journey. In today’s episode, we're going to revisit that time — a moment that shaped my role as a mother and an advocate. We'll talk about the challenges of pregnancy loss, the importance of seeking second opinions, and finding our voices in the loud and often overwhelming world of medical decisions. I'll be sharing a very personal story of a Level 2 ultrasound that triggered memories of my past pregnancy, where I was advised to consider a reduction due to severe complications with one of my triplets. Together with my family and against the initial grim forecast, we sought another opinion which led us down a different, life-altering path. In the midst of the fear, we found hope and the critical need to ask questions and to trust our instincts. So, let's embrace our past experiences, learn from them, and use them to empower our choices today. Remember, you are not alone, and your feelings are valid. Whether you're here seeking comfort, understanding, or just a space to feel heard — you're in the right place. 34. Passive Milk Collectors are Not Primary Pumps

2/22/2024
It seems like everywhere I look right now, I'm seeing advertisements for the latest passive milk collectors. You must be seeing them too because I am getting a lot of messages from followers asking about my opinion. So let’s talk about this controversial issue and the impact it can have on your milk supply. In this episode, I share my thoughts about the rise of new companies and their advertisements for passive milk collectors, and get real about the importance of understanding the method of milk removal and its impact on maintaining milk supply. I also explore the need for effective removal systems and the potential drawbacks of relying solely on passive milk collectors. This is a true deep dive into the world of passive collectors and how they fit into the broader landscape of lactation and breast pumping. Remember, what works for one mom may not work for another, so it's essential to understand the differences between passive milk collectors and primary pumps. My hope is that you can take the information from today’s episode and make your own informed decision on what is best for you and your body. 31. Starting Solids with Jenny Best of @solidstarts

2/1/2024
For decades we have been told that babies need to start with pureed foods when they start solids. But what if I told you that these purees might not be the best starting point, and that self-feeding can be the key to developing safe and effective eating habits? In this episode, I sit down with Jenny Best, founder of Solid Starts, a platform dedicated to guiding parents through the introduction of solids to their little ones. With over 3 million followers on Instagram (@solidstarts), she is challenging the old-school notion that babies need a gradual introduction to thicker foods while confronting the fear-based messages from traditional baby food advertising. This episode is packed with insight, history, and empathy. We'll discuss how feeding strategies have evolved from the 1880s to now, and why contemporary wisdom aligns with the developmental readiness of your baby for solids around six to eight months. We'll also debunk common choking myths and encourage you to trust in your baby's natural instincts. 28. Increasing Milk Supply with Kelly Kendall

1/11/2024
We have Kelly Kendall back on the show today. She was our guest back on Episode 3: Hand Expression with Kelly Kendall so if you haven’t listened to that episode, be sure to go back and check that out. Today we are talking about a not very complicated topic that moms seem to overcomplicate. And that is increasing milk supply. Kelly is a nurse, an IBCLC, the face behind the Instagram account @thebalancedboob, and has a feeding course called Boob School. She and I met nearly four years ago and have been friends ever since. She is a knowledge of information and understands that when it comes to increasing your supply, it’s really the foundations that matter. We discuss what a normal amount of breast milk in one session is - whether you're pumping or breastfeeding. Kelly shares tips like changing the time of day (or night rather in this situation) that you are pumping, making sure you are using the right pump for you, eating a well balanced diet, and whether or not supplemental things like cookies and teas really work to increase your supply. One thing we want you to remember is that if you are having a bad pump session or baby doesn’t seem to be latching well at the moment, it’s okay to end your session and come back to it when you are less stressed. Your body knows when it is under increased pressure and won’t produce as much milk in those types of situations. So, like I always say, sit back, relax, and let’s have a let down! 27. 10 Week Ultrasound with a Twist

12/14/2023
I’ve been debating what I want to share with you all as far as this pregnancy goes. It’s not because I’m a super private person, we all know that isn’t true, but I never want to bore you guys by talking about myself all the time. However, I just had my 10 week ultrasound and it was very triggering for me. I’m sharing my story because I felt like if I’m dealing with this, then I can’t be the only one. In this episode I share how ultrasound appointments are very emotional for me. I have PTSD from my ultrasound appointment where we found out we had lost baby C in my first pregnancy with my triplets. I also share how my 10 week ultrasound appointment went this time around and how there was a full-circle moment that brought on a whole new rush of emotions for me. Being pregnant is scary. Some people have the easiest pregnancies in the world while many of us do not. If you find yourself in a similar situation to mine, I want to say that it’s okay and normal to feel emotional or upset. And I don’t think it’s unusual to go into these types of appointments with worry due to your past experiences. If you are currently pregnant or trying to conceive and have suffered from a loss, or multiple, I’m sorry that you’ve had to go through that. I was shocked to learn some of the information that Sonia shared and I know you will be enlightened as well. Sonia is the mom to a four month old son and she shares how members from her Indian community made her feel guilty for pumping. They regard pumped milk as being different from milk that is fed to the baby directly from the boob. Sonia also shares that in Indian culture, women don’t breastfeed until 48-72 hours after the baby is born. Tune in to hear what they do with the colostrum.. Your jaw might hit the floor!
