Man-Spider by Ethan Mawyer

5/31/2024
From about the moment I heard Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, I wanted to make a parody of it. But I was in a bit of a creative slump last year, and nothing with much potential came to mind. Eventually, not sure how, "Please tell me why no one's stopped that man-spider" entered my thoughts. And I was still in too much of a slump to do anything about it. But eventually I ended up taking a musical comedy writing class to try to get the juices flowing, and that ended up giving me the kick I needed to turn that one line into a full song about how mad J Jonah Jameson gets regarding the web-slinging superhero. I think it turned out pretty well.

FIVE DOLLAR FLIP FLOPS by John Trentes

5/14/2024
This is a rootsy rave-up that I wrote with my wonderful wife Erin Trentes and the late, great Barbara Dorris. We wanted to write a song that was empowering to women yet catchy and ear-wormy. I've performed it live at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe a number of times, and even got it in front of Darius Rucker, although it was a "no". I've been rejected by the best, folks. :) Hope you like it!!

What's Up, Spock (2024 Version) by Devo Spice

4/26/2024
When Luke Ski performed "What's Up, Spock?" at MarsCon 2022 he ended it by joking that he was going to add a new verse about Star Trek: Discovery, then said "No, I can't make that song any longer." Well, I can! So here is an updated version of "What's Up, Spock?" that includes verses for Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. This song will be included on a new album of cover songs that I've done over the years, which will include a few new ones such as "It's All About the Pentiums" by "Weird Al" Yankovic using a chiptunes version of the original music, and "Tortuga" by Alestorm featuring pirate rapper Captain Dan. The album will also include my covers of "New Math" by Tom Lehrer, "The Big Five-0" by Doodoo Wah, "The Laundromat of Sin" by Worm Quartet, a few live performances from the MarsCon Dementia Smackdown concerts, and more! Cover Up will be available on Bandcamp on Friday, May 3rd. Lyrics: Luke Ski, Devo Spice Vocals: Devo Spice Background vocals: Devo Spice, Shoebox, Insane Ian Music: Trevor Cochran

It's A Hit (Because I'm On It) by Project Sisyphus

4/16/2024
One of the (many) disadvantages of being a musician of a certain age is that musical trends of yesteryear often return, like jury duty or inflation, and only serve to remind you how much you hated them the first time. OTOH, the whole Yacht Rock thing...we actually thought that music was pretty darn good, with or without irony. Hence today's selection, which marks not only our first voyage on the smooth seas of Yacht Rock, but our first attempt at an artist style parody. Capturing the vocal style of our chosen artist (if we have to say who, we've entirely failed) was the single factor preventing me from unleashing this years ago, because I knew it couldn't be done without the perfect voice. We are thrilled to feature vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Rick Cowling, whose own yacht-club pedigree with acts such as Kenny Loggins and Ambrosia stands above reproach. And Mrs. Cowling - actress/singer Sherry Hursey - was kind enough to help out on some high notes. Hope you enjoy the cruise! Rick Cowling - lead and background vocals, funky guitar, tambourine Sherry Hursey - background vocals Bob Emmet - keyboards, bass, rhythm stuff, and mixing (music and Mai Tais).

Baby's Head 2024 by Ookla The Mok

4/9/2024
In 1992, while recording Poor Man's Copyright (what most people know as "The Rand and Adam Tape") we improvised a song called "Baby's Head," mostly because we had 15 songs, and wanted to put out a tape with an even number of songs on each side. This is not a song we were particularly proud of, but a certain segment of our fanbase really took a shine to it. While many songs from this tape have been recorded "for real" in the subsequent years, this is one that we always swore we'd never rerecord -- mostly because of our belief that whatever charm the song had was due to its improvisational nature. This has caused the song to take on an unearned infamy, and we've spent the last 30 years amusingly flummoxed when people ask us to play this one live. Over the last few months, we've been experimenting with creating live backing tracks -- using AI to strip the vocals from the songs -- and former Ookla member (and owner of Watchmen Studios) Doug White recently surprised us with this track. He went the other way, stripping our acoustic guitar from "Baby's Head" and adding new drums, bass, and electric guitars under our original vocals, maintaining the "integrity" of the original improvisation, while providing something much more listenable. So what you're listening to are vocals recorded in 1992 and instruments recorded in 2024. Enjoy!
