In June 2022 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision issued its second consultation on the prudential treatment of banks’ exposures to cryptoassets. The Committee has now finalised its prudential standard, which has been endorsed by the Committee’s oversight body, the Group of Governors and Heads of Supervision. This document sets out the final standard which the Committee has agreed to implement by 1 January 2025.

MiCA framework introduces significant regulatory control and oversight of previously unregulated areas of a crypto-asset industry. Complying with MiCA, however, may present challenges, especially for DeFi. MiCA focuses on the issuance of crypto-assets and the provision of crypto-asset services. The most stringent requirements are reserved for stablecoins that are designated by the European Banking Authority as significant.
