Liberty is the state of being free within society from control or oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behaviour, or political views. Liberty entails the responsible use of freedom under the rule of law without depriving anyone else of their freedom. A primary goal of LRI is to assist in extending the concept and practice of Liberty to the world through freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. The essential human right of free speech, a fundamental building block of free society, was affirmed by the U.S. Bill of Rights in 1791 and by the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
