Family + Educator Together Teams (FETs)

Ari Gerzon-Kessler EMAIL: arigerzon@gmail.com Ari spent two decades implementing SEL best practices as a teacher and principal, and led retreats for educators as well on SEL. He applies much of that to coaching teachers and school leaders on how to build stronger partnerships with underrepresented families and integrate those practices into gatherings with families, which include conversations around ways to support students and families mental health. He also spent 16 years working as a teacher and school leader... 7 years coaching educators at 30 plus schools... extensive expertise on SEL, with several articles published specifically around mental health as it connects to creating safer schools and preventing violence. A decade plus on the board of Passageworks Institute, which for 22 years focused on supporting the mental health of students, families and educators! One of the major ways he supports the mental health of all stakeholders within a school community is by creating spaces where people can show up authentically and feel deeply seen, heard, and valued. Bullying Series: Teachers Can Make or Break Students

2/7/2024
Guest: Anika Smith Website: phoenixsoaringcounseling.com Email: anikasmith@phoenixsoaringcounseling.com The narrative of transitioning from a traumatic past to owning a private practice serves as a tangible success story. This journey offers hope and optimism, encouraging listeners to believe in the potential for positive change, growth, and success, even after enduring significant challenges. Growing up with extreme trauma and enduring relentless bullying in school marked the darkest chapters of my early years. The weight of those experiences cast a long shadow on my mental health, leaving me grappling with the profound impact well into adulthood. In the depths of despair, I found solace in coping mechanisms that, though imperfect, became lifelines during my darkest moments. Seeking help was a transformative decision, and the support I received from friends, family, and professionals guided me towards a path of healing and personal growth. Today, as the proud owner of a private practice, my journey fuels a passionate advocacy for improving school mental health, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive despite the challenges they may face. The narrative of transitioning from a traumatic past to owning a private practice serves as a tangible success story. This journey offers hope and optimism, encouraging listeners to believe in the potential for positive change, growth, and success, even after enduring significant challenges. The key takeaway for educators and school leaders is that every student's journey is unique, and acknowledging the prevalence of trauma and bullying is crucial. By fostering a culture of compassion and understanding, educators can create a safe space where students feel empowered to seek help. My personal narrative underscores the transformative impact of supportive environments and the potential for resilience and growth in the face of adversity. School leaders play a pivotal role in championing mental health initiatives, ensuring that resources and support systems are readily available. Ultimately, the takeaway is a call to action — a collective responsibility to prioritize and invest in the mental well-being of students, creating a foundation for their success and overall thriving. If our discussion on the podcast resonates with you, or if someone is interested in having me speak at your school for students and teachers about bullying and the impact a teacher can have, you can arrange a complimentary consultation to determine if we are a good match., , phoenixsoaringcounseling.com _______________________________________________ Thriving Educator Podcast HOST: Charle Peck, M.Ed., MSW Hire Charle to equip your teachers with mental health tools that easily integrate into their daily practice at your next professional development day.
